Vienna city transport
Tourists have three public transport options from the Vienna International Airport in the Schwechat suburb to the city center -- by City Airport Train, S-Bahn train and Vienna Airport bus.
The City Airport train costs €9 and takes tourists to the Wien-Mitte Railway Station in 16 minutes. It's one of the quickest ways into the city and the preferred option for many business travelers.
The S-Bahn also takes travelers to Wien Mitte as well as to Wien Nord, and Wien Handelskai. The trip is about 40 minutes long and costs €3.40.
The Vienna Airport bus has two destinations: to Morzinplatz (€6, 20 minutes) and to the central rail station (€6, 30 minutes).
Tourists can also take a taxi from the airport and a trip to the city center costs around €40. Taxis are relatively more expensive in Vienna than in other major European cities.
Once in Vienna, most tourists prefer to take the bus, tram and underground railway to travel because the city is easy to navigate. For public transportation, a Vienna Card can result in terrific savings. It costs around €18.50 but provides free unlimited travel for a week by bus and underground railway and significant discounts on the tram and at various museums, restaurants, theaters and other tourist spots. Tourists also have the option of buying a 24-hour ticket (€5) and a 72-hour ticket (€12). Individual tickets are sold for €1.50.
The best way to travel around the city center is by taking Tram 1 and Tram 2 which both run circular routes around Vienna’s historic core. The only difference between them is that they go on opposite directions of the loop.
On sunny days, tourists will discover that walking around Vienna can be a treat. Most of the locals enjoy walking around Vienna's cobblestones and pavements. Vienna also has numerous bicycle paths and lanes around its major streets and tourist attractions. There are plenty of places in the city where you can rent a bike.
