What to do in Antwerp
Grote Markt (Town Square)
Heart of the old city, Grote Markt is a pedestrian district and it definitely is one of the most beautiful squares in Antwerp. With its picturesque Flemish Renaissance style “Guild houses” Grote Markt is a must-see place while in Antwerp.
Town Hall
Completed in 1564, Town Hall is located on Grote Markt and it is one of the most significant examples of Renaissance style buildings in Low Lands.
Het Steen (The Stone)
Located right beside the river Scheldt, this little castle with a history dates back to 13th century is one of the earliest buildings constructed with stones in Antwerp. “Het Steen” houses The National Navigation Museum since 1952.
The Meir
The Meir is famous for the huge number of shops and for the historical Rococo style buildings it houses, such as Osterrieth-house which dates back to 18th century.
Our Lady’s Cathedral
Our Lady’s Cathedral is situated in Groenplaats. Built in Gothic style, the Cathedral is one of the highlights in Antwerp housing great works by the painter Peter Paul Rubens. (Admission fee: EUR 2.00)
The Royal Museum of Fine Arts
Situated on the southern part of Antwerp, The Royal Museum of Fine Arts guarantees a breathtaking experience with its splendid collection including famous works of Van Eyck, Memling, Rubens, Ensor and Permeke.
Vleeshuis (The Butcher’s Hall)
Nestled in a late Gothic building, Vleeshuis was formerly the chamber of butcher’s guild. Now a museum, it houses an interesting collection on the subjects applied arts and archaeology.
