Copenhagen. Home of the Little Mermaid

The city is called “Paris of the North” because Copenhagen and Paris have similar charms. Both have a rich history, classic art and architecture, and amazing tourist attractions.

Copenhagen is best known for Carlsberg beer, the stories of Hans Christian Andersen and the Tivoli gardens, but the city has much more to offer foreign tourists, including a wealth of cultural attractions and entertainment options.

Like Paris, Copenhagen has something for everyone, whether you’re modern or traditional, gay or straight, a party-loving couple or a family with children. Moreover, the city has a strong sense of style and is in fact the design capital of Scandinavia.

Founded in 1167, Copenhagen began as a fishing village and metamorphosed into an enclave of the modern Scandinavian lifestyle with impressive restaurants, cafes and hotels. For the last 600 years, it has been the capital and largest city of Denmark, characterized by several blocks of historic six-storey buildings and beautiful church steeples that highlight its skyline.

Located on the Zealand and Amager Islands, Copenhagen is Scandinavia’s link to mainland Europe. The city is also connected to Sweden by the Oresund Bridge. The city’s population is 1.1 million. The larger Metropolitan Area’s population is 1.8 million.

Monocle magazine ranked Copenhagen second on its list of Top 20 Most Livable Cities in 2007. The expatriate business community seems to think so. The city trails only London and Paris in terms of having the most number of regional headquarters in Europe.

This modern city with a rich history also has its eyes firmly fixed on the future. The city has planned several modern buildings in the next few years, including the Marble Pie, the UN’s future headquarters in Denmark; Carlsberg’s Our City building (cost: 2.8 billion Euro); and, by 2010, the new headquarters of Dansk Industri.
