Festivals and events in Nice
Nice has its share of world-class festivals and events. The following are some of the most popular ones.
Nice Carnival
Of all the annual festivals in Nice, the world-famous Nice Carnival is hands-down the biggest and most popular one. Staged every February, the carnival has been held in Nice since the 13th century. It started featuring a well-loved parade of colorful floats and giant papier-mâché figures with huge heads in 1873. Every year, the Nice Carnival just keeps getting bigger and bigger with more parades, street parties and flower and confetti showers. It culminates with a dazzling fireworks display on the night of Mardi Gras.
Festin des Cougourdons
Every March, the Festin des Cougourdons is staged at the gardens of the Cimiez monastery. The locals celebrate it in an odd sort of way – by displaying decorated dried squashes. There is also an annual mass, folk music concerts and dancing in the streets.
Day of St. Peter and St. John
Every June, the city remembers its two patron saints, St. John and St. Peter, with a series of masses and processions during the daytime and music and dancing at night. The city celebrates the Feast of St. Reparate in October much the same way.
Jazz Festival
Held since 1948, the Jazz Festival n July has been one of the most popular events in Nice for many years. It is also the highlight in a series of musical events every summer that include the Festival of Sacred Music (June), Festival Voucalia de Musique Méditerranéenne (July) and the Nuits Musicales de Nice (July and August).
