Nice the bold
The locals hate it when tourists call their city “nice,” and it’s not only because the city’s name is pronounced as “niece.” They’re insulted because they feel Nice isn’t quite that bland. Rather, they would prefer that tourists refer to their city as sexy, shiny, maybe even gritty. And they do have a point.
As one Nice journalist put it, if the city were a person, it would wear designer clothes, old army boots, go looking for trouble and be thoroughly insulted at being called nice.
Yes, the city is brash and bold. But the fact is that Nice is actually quite nice, especially for its beautiful coastline, tasty pastries, delightful flower market and friendly people. On the other hand, Nice is sexy, shiny and gritty when you consider its beaches, nightlife and ancient architecture. Suffice it to say that Nice has something for everyone, whether it’s nice or sexy, young or old.
Located on the French Riviera at the Mediterranean coast, Nice is the capital of the Côte d'Azur. With 347,100 inhabitants, it is the fifth largest city in France. As of 2007, its metropolitan area had over 1.9 million inhabitants
According to archaeological evidence, Nice once had one of the world’s oldest human settlements, dating back to more than 400,000 years. Relics found at the Terra Amata archeological site indicate that Nice was also one of the first places to use fire and construct houses. Nice was founded by the Greeks around 350 BC and once hosted an independent Roman city at Cimiez hill.
