Athens

Athens. The city with the most glorious history in the world, a city worshipped by gods and people, a magical city. The enchanting capital of Greece has always been a birthplace for civilization. It is the city where democracy was born and most of the wise men of ancient times. The most important civilization of ancient world flourished in Athens and relives through some of the world's most formidable edifices.

The Acropolis in Athens is one of the most recognisable monuments in the world and this is normally the first Athens attraction that visitors to the city head for. If you are visiting Athens during the Summer months then do try to get to the Acropolis as early in the morning as possible to avoid both the heat and the crowds.

The Plaka is the oldest part of Athens and most touristy area of the city. To get to Plaka travel to Monastiraki or Syntagma metro stations. Despite the fact that the area is very touristy it is still worth a visit and is very pretty and pleasant to wander round the narrow cobbled sgtreets and take a glass of Ouzu at one of the street cafes.

Getting to and around the city

The Metro is the best way to get to Athens centre from the airport and apart from walking it is the quickest and effective way to travel around the city. There are three main lines which are coloured for ease of getting around; green, red and blue.

The green line will whisk you to and from Piraeus and stops at Monastiraki which is the stop you will want to get off at if you are visiting the Plaka and Acropolis. The red line will take you from and to the main Bus Terminal and stops at Syntagma Square. The blue linetakes you from and to the airport stopping at Monastiraki and Syntagma Square en route. Six of the main stations in Athens have ancient artifacts on public display.
