Hotspots and nightspots in Hong Kong
There was a time when locals frowned on drinking, which is not surprising given Hong Kong’s links to China. However, drinking is now a widely accepted practice and quite popular among the city’s younger generation.
The popular hotspot for night-time entertainment among Westerners is Lan Kwai Fong in Central Hong Kong. It has plenty of bars and trendy restaurants. The slightly sleazier Wan Chai district also has plenty of nightlife such as girly joints. Other popular nightspots include Causeway Bay and Eastern Soho.
The most popular beers are Tsing Tao, Carlsberg and San Miguel. Most people prefer the imported San Miguel from the Philippines.
There’s always a Happy Hour promotion around Hong Kong so most people like to wander about before selecting their next stop for the night. Wednesday is Ladies Night, and women get free drinks at some bars and clubs.
Here are some of the most popular bars and clubs around.
Red Bar
There’s nothing like drinking outdoors on a windy day and watching the serene harbor. The Red Bar provides just that kind of ambience. As the weekends approach, DJs get busy with funk and jazz. Located at the top of the IFC building, 8 Finance St, Central, this is one of the best places in Hong Kong to bring in the New Year.
Captain's Bar
Located at 5 Connaught Rd, Central, the Captain's Bar is an elegant club and disco that attracts the city’s business types. They are reputed to have the best martinis in town. The beers are ice cold and food is excellent.
Devil's Advocate
A favorite place of tourists, this pub is very laid back and relaxed. During summer, the crowd spills out into the streets and the dancing doesn’t stop. Devil’s Advocate is located at 48-50 Lockhart Rd, Wan Chai.
Skitz
This is probably the best sports bar in the city, located at 21-25 Luard Rd, Wan Chai. It has a huge plasma screen that regularly airs international sporting events. Guests can also play darts or test their skills at the pool tables.
