Catania- Lively and colourful Mediterranean city
As the second most important city in Sicily, Catania is dominated by Mount Etna, on the east coast.
Worth a visit is for sure the European highest active volcano: adventurers and hikers can even experience the night excursions on Mount Etna, which brings the bravest and most curious visitors close to the active eruption site.
In town interesting attractions are the Piazza del Duomo (Dome’s Square), with the Elephant Fountain, the symbol of the city, the nearby fish and street market, lively and colourful, the Medieval Ursino Castle, which used to be a coastal fortress, which nowadays hosts a museum.
For those who prefer leisure activities, the main shopping area is Via Etnea, with all its shops and ancient buildings.
