Palermo- Culture, Architecture & gastronmy.

Palermo, the capital city of Sicily, is a town that time forgot: the streets, the parks, the buildings, all smell of ancient splendours, particularly of the Magna Graecia and Roman Empire later. Colourful traditions and festivals, tasty gastronomic delicacies and museums full of findings, are still present nowadays.

All over the city visitors can admire numerous monuments to honour past and recent heroes, myriad of churches, with their majestic mosaics, and exquisite sweet and salty specialties form the local cuisine.

The major highlights in Palermo are the cathedral, characterized by different architectural – styles, the Palazzo dei Normanni, one of the most beautiful Italian palaces, with its famous Cappella Palatina, a combination of Norman, Byzantine and Arabic influences and the newly restored Teatro Massimo.

Not to miss is a sunbath at the Mondello Beach, west of Palermo, and of course a trip on Mount Pellegrino, from where an amazing panorama can be enjoyed.

The region of Sicily

Sicily, the land of lemons and oranges, is a region of ancient flavour. In every city, at every corner and even in the middle of the country-side there is a piece of Greek, Roman or recent Italian history.

The major attraction of the island is obviously Mount Etna, the European highest active volcano. Other important sights of Sicily are the Greek and Roman temples spread all over the island and the majestic mosaics of Villa del Casale in Piazza Armerina. Not to forget to try the famous delicacies cannoli and the Caponata salad. Sicily’s most famous wine is the Marsala, produced in the homonym city on the west coast of the island and can be tasted as appetizer. But the white wine Zibibbo and the red Nero d’Avola are the favourite of the local population.
