The tram is cheap in Rome
There are two international airports in Rome. The Leonardo da Vinci International Airport (Rome Fiumicino) is connected to the city center by public transportation. Ciampino International Airport (Rome Ciampino) is located south of Rome.
From Leonardo da Vinci Airport, tourists can take the Leonardo Express to the Roma Termini central train station (€11 for 30-minute trip) or the Metropolitan train to the Tiburtina Station (€5.50). At €2, the bus is the cheapest way to get to the city center. A taxi will cost €40 to the city center while rental cars are also available for varying prices. Shuttle services are also available but must be booked a day in advance.
From the Ciampino International Airport, tourists can take the bus (€1) or the Sit bus shuttle (€6) to the city center or a train to the Rome Termini station (€2). There's also a Terravision direct bus service to Termini that costs €8. A taxi ride to the city center costs €30. Rental cars are also available for varying rates.
Once in Rome, most tourists prefer to travel around by taxi. It can be an expensive way to go but experience teaches travelers that it’s worth it for convenience. A typical trip to anywhere within the city walls will cost around €11.
If you’re wandering around the city center, it’s best to travel by foot, especially at night, so you can soak in Rome’s romantic ambience. Crossing busy streets can be tricky since motorists don’t slow down but will swerve to avoid pedestrians. And watch out for those mopeds that sometimes appear from nowhere.
Buses in Rome are usually late but they will take you everywhere in the city. They’re not a recommended travel option if you’re in a hurry though. Maps of bus routes are available at all stations and they’re very helpful.
The tram is a cheap way to get around Rome but it skirts many historic attractions.
