How to get around venice
Two international airports service Venice: the Marco Polo Airport on Mestre and the Treviso Airport, 25 kms from the city. Most international air carriers go to the Marco Polo Airport, except Ryanair, SkyEurope, and Transavia which land at the Treviso Airport.
Tourists can take the bus from either airport to get to the city center and it costs €3 from Marco Polo and €5 from Treviso.
Once in Venice, tourists have to adjust themselves to the feel of a city which has no cars. It’s the only pedestrian city in the world, so tourists must acclimatize quickly. Everyone walks to get to where they are going. Walking from one end of the Rialtine islands to the other only takes about an hour.
Buses do exist in Venice, but hardly anybody uses them. They run from Piazzale Roma to Mestre and a few other destinations, but they are probably the corniest way to see the city.
To get from island to island, riding on a water bus (vaporetti) or a water taxi is the quickest way. The vaporettis are the most popular mode of transportation in Venice. They’re fast and convenient, but change routes frequently so travelers must double-check their route. Water taxis are more comfortable since you have them all to yourself, but can also be expensive. Meanwhile, if you’re a couple, don’t miss a gondola ride through the canals of Venice. Nothing can be more romantic.
If you plan to use the vaporetti, purchase a Venice card to save significantly. They’re available for 12 hours, 48 hours and seven days. A single ride on the vaporetti costs around €6.50 while a 12-hour Venice Card costs only €10. There are free maps available at the vaporetti stop, so make sure you grab one.
