Festivals and Events in Amsterdam
Queen’s Day (30 April)
Queen’s Day (Koninginnedag in Dutch) is one of the biggest events which draw thousands of visitors to Amsterdam each year. Queen’s Day is a celebration of the Queen’s birthday and the celebration of the unity of the country. On this day (and the night before) people get together in the most famous squares in Amsterdam (Dam Square, Rembrandt Square and Leidseplein Square) wearing orange clothes, celebrating this occasion.
Holland Festival (Every year end of May – June)
Holland Festival is The Netherlands’s oldest and the biggest performing arts festival. The festival takes place in different venues in Amsterdam and houses a great number of local and international performers.
Museum Night (Every first week of November Saturday night)
Museum Night (Museumnacht in Dutch) is a special occasion when all the museums in Amsterdam open their doors to the visitors for free. During the night from 19.00 until 02.00 in the morning visitors have chance to visit the museums and enjoy several cultural activities take place.
Sinterklaas (Sunday in the middle of November each year)
Sinterklaas is the celebration of the arrival of Saint Nicolas in Amsterdam. Every year his arrival on a ship is celebrated with a representation of the event which is followed by a festive Amsterdam tour. This arrival is considered to be the start of the shopping time which lasts until the 5th of December when the Dutch give seasonal gifts to each other.
