Transportation to and in Utrecht

Utrecht is literally the heart of the Dutch railway system and the distribution point due to its location right in the middle of the country. It is one of the major train hubs in the country allowing easy transportation to almost all the cities in the country as well to the other countries.
The city has the largest train station (Utrecht Centraal) in the Netherlands which is attached to an enormous shopping mall called Hoog Catherijne. Once you get of from the train make sure that you follow the signs that lead to the exit very carefully, otherwise it is highly possible that you find yourself walking in this huge shopping mall trying to find the way out.
Utrecht Centraal Station has a modern building which has many amenities such as lockers which come handy if you are in Utrecht for a few hours and do not want to carry your luggage with you into the city.
Utrecht has a direct railway connection to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. One way ride takes about 30 minutes and costs €7.60. (€13.90 return).
There is a tram line in the city serving between Utrecht Centraal and some major neighbourhoods (Lombok and Kanaleneiland to Nieuwegein and IJsselstein) in the city.
Travelling in Utrecht is not a big problem. As the city is pretty small almost all main sites are within walking distance to each other. For the ones who don’t fancy walking hiring a bike would be a solution. There are several places in the city where you can hire bikes. This costs round €10.00 for 24 hours.
Perhaps one of the best ways to explore this charming city is to hire a canal bike. A ride through the canals will let you feel the unique atmosphere of the city. (€7.00 per person for one hour).
There are also canal boats which offer guided tours along the canals which serve as a great opportunity to get information about the city and the places in the mean time you see them.
