Electric nightlife in Madrid

Aside from Madrid's rich cultural heritage, the city is renowned for having perhaps the world's most exciting and electric nightlife.

Like lunch and dinner in Madrid, night-time partying in the city usually starts later than in most places. People in Madrid head out for drinks only after midnight. That's not really surprising if you consider that dinner is usually at 9 to 10:30 p.m. Do as the locals do. Otherwise, getting to a club before midnight means that it is still empty.

Some people only arrive at their favorite nightspots at 2 or 3 a.m. then stay until closing time. To party like the natives, end your night the Spanish way: with a breakfast of chocolate con churros before you head home. After all, the clubs close at 6 a.m. so it really is time for breakfast.

You have to be over 18 to drink and enter Madrid's bars and clubs. Drinking in the streets is prohibited but still practiced is some areas.

Most tourists party at Plaza de Santa Ana in Huertas, which hosts many topnotch bars, clubs and even Irish pubs. Another tourist favorite is La Latina, which has smaller bars and draws an older crowd,

The following are some of the most popular nightspots in Madrid.

Lola Bar
Located at Calle de la Reina 25, Chueca, this cocktail lounge is a perfect place to start your night, with chill out music and plenty of drinks. Things are a little uptempo during weekends. However, at €9.50, the mojitos may strike you as a bit pricey.

Jazz Bar
Jazz lovers who enjoy their privacy will feel right at home in the Jazz Bar, located at Calle de Moratín 35, Huertas. They play live jazz and blues until the morning comes. They have private booths so guests don’t have to worry about being crowded.

La Cartuja
If you’re ready for some dancing, this is an ideal place. La Cartuja actually has three bars to choose from whether you prefer modern dance beats, salsa and tango or Spanish disco songs. It’s located at Calle de la Cruz 10, Huertas.

Dos Gardenias
Huertas can be a bit overwhelming, especially on weekends. For a soothing change of pace, Dos Gardenias on Calle de Santa María 13, Huertas is the answer. The chill-out music can restore your groove as you unwind in their comfortable sofas. They also serve the best mojitos in Huertas.
