The fun never stops in Madrid
It's sometimes hard to figure out if a festival is going on in Madrid because the merry-making never seems to stop all year round. However, there are a handful of occasions when the city really goes off the charts in its partying. The following are some of the biggest festivals and events in Madrid.
Carnevale
This is one of Madrid’s biggest festivals of the year. It begins a few days before Lent in February or March. In Spain, the Carnevale trails only Rio de Janeiro when it comes to extravagance.
Fiesta de la Comunidad de Madrid
Celebrated on May 2, this festival is the biggest of May’s series of festivals. They include the Fiesta del Trabajo or Labor Day (May 2), Fiestas de San Isidro Labrador which honors the patron saint of Madrid (May 15) and the annual Festimad Music festival.
Saints’ Days
Throughout June and July, Madrid’s different districts honor their patron saints. These days are declared public holidays and offices and shops close to let people celebrate on the streets,. If the patron saint’s day falls on a weekend, then that means two non-stop days of celebrations. Free concerts are held at open-air spaces around Madrid.
Bullfighting Season
Madrid is famous for its bullfights as depicted by the likes of Ernest Hemingway and Sid Vicious in word and song. The bullfighting season begins in February at the Plaza de Toros Monumental de Las Ventas, the biggest bullfighting ring in the world. Small corridas are held around the city during summer and spring. The biggest bullfighting event of the year is the Feria in mid-May and features four straight weeks of bullfights
