Getting to and around Madrid

Among all European capitals, Madrid probably has the most convenient and comfortable connections from the airport to the city. From the Barajas International Airport, tourists can take the metro (20 minutes), airport bus (30-40 minutes) or a taxi (12 minutes) to get to the city center.

Once inside the city, most people travel by bus or metro. For newcomers to Madrid, the Metro de Madrid is much easier to use. The underground tunnels also give travelers a chance to get out from under the hot Madrid sun. Tourists who decide to take the metro regularly should purchase a Metrobus ticket for €6.70. It’s good for 10 rides and can also be used on the EMT city buses. The Metro does not run late on Fridays and Saturdays but, during those days, a night bus service known as Buho Metro takes the Metro’s place and covers its routes.

The EMT bus service operates most of the buses in the city and charges €1 per trip, which is paid as you board. Tourists can get a good idea of EMT’s routes by checking the Consorcio Transportes Madrid web site. The Madrid Tourist Bus also has several routes but it’s not air-conditioned and can be unbearably hot in summer.

Taxis are available everywhere in Madrid and they’re relatively cheaper than in other European capitals. However, taxis are significantly more expensive than public transport. Getting a taxi at night can be a problem as so many other people are looking for a cab. The best way to get a taxi at night is to wait for one at a major thoroughfare such as Calle Alcalá and Paseo del Prado. You know a taxi is available when it has a green light on top.

It’s possible to rent a car, but driving around Madrid can be a problem because there are too many cars and not enough streets. Moreover, some of the streets are too narrow, especially in the old town. It’s better to take a taxi instead.

Bicycles can be dangerous around the city since there are no bike lanes or reserved sections. It’s rare to see a biker on the streets. Many tourists enjoy walking around the city as long as it’s not too hot.
