Breathtaking Basel
Most visitors to Basel will agree that the Town Hall known locally as the Rathaus is just breathtaking. The fourteenth century red building overlooks the Market Square which is itself an attraction and where you can buy flowers and fresh foods from the local sellers.
The Basel Munster is top of any visitors ‘Must see’ list. The church is in the Old Town and is the biggest church in Basel. It was built in the thirteenth century. If you are able to climb the narrow steps of the towers then you will be rewarded with a spectacular view of Basel.
While you are sightseeing in Basel, do try a Baseler Leckeri. This is a speciality biscuit only found in Basel. It’s a sweet biscuit and rather chewy filled with nuts, spices and candied fruits. It’s sure to give you an energy boost which you will need because Basel is best explored on foot.
If you want to get away from the busy city of Basel for an afternoon then you will enjoy a walk around the suburb known as St. Alban Vorstadt. It’s very pretty and you will also be able to see the remains of Basel’s city ramparts, the collection of caricatures and cartoons as well as the Museum of contemporary art and the Basel paper mill.
To get to St Alban you can take the number 3 tram.
For a memorable night in Basel then head for the cities tallest tower which is the Messeturm and the Bar Rouge. The Bar is open until the early hours of the morning. Some nights there will be a cover charge depending upon the event. If you have a head for heights then this is the place to be!
