The resort of Side
Alexandra the Great once occupied Side. These days however the resort is occupied by visitors from all over Europe.
To get to the attractive resort of Side you will more than likely fly to Antalya Airport and from there Side is approximately 1 hours drive away.
The long sandy beaches of Side are clean and attract many visitors especially during the summer months. As a tourist resort there are the usual souvenir shops, bars and restaurants. But what makes the resort of Side a little different is that amongst the souvenir shops you will find ancient Roman ruins such as the Temple of Apollo, the Hellanistic Great gate and the Roman Theatre which is still in use today for summer concerts.
The local currency is Turkish Lira but you will find most shops and restaurants have their prices in both EUR and GBP.
Local foods include Pide which is like a flat bread pizza, Dolma, Kofte and Kebaps. If you are a vegetarian there you will find a good selection of vegetable dishes including aubergines and peppers.
Local drinks are much cheaper than the imported brands. Try the Efes bira. A smooth beer and extremely popular. For something with a extra kick try a glass of raki. Raki, which has a strong aniseed taste is clear in colour but when mixed with water turns cloudy. Raki is always served with a glass of water.
The local transport is either Dolmus or taxi. The taxis park just outside of the pedestrian area of Side and the fares to the main destinations and hotel resorts are clearly marked on a board so that you know whet you will pay before you get in the taxi.
