Best nightlife in Glasgow
A few decades ago, there were only two kinds of nightspots in Glasgow: swanky and squalid. These days, however, the city has a wide variety of pubs, bars and nightclubs to suit every conceivable taste. The following are some of the best of them.
Corinthian
Located at 191 Ingram St in the city center, Corinthian is an impressive club and disco with a marvelous domed ceiling decorated with huge chandeliers. The building used to house the city’s High Court and, before that, a bank. These days, it’s filled to overflowing on Saturday nights with tourists and locals alike dancing to funk. If the music gets to be too much, the Lite Bar and its soothing piano are right next door.
Cathouse
Another popular club and disco at the city center is Cathouse, Glasgow’s Goth hangout and the leading alternative venue in the city, located at 15 Union St. Two of its three floors are for dancing. The mosh pit is on the ground floor. The true metal and hard rock habitués can be found at the top floor doing their thing.
The Three Judges
It’s one of the best places for real ale, located on Dumbarton Road at the West End. They serve a wide range of ales from every corner of the UK. Moreover, their broad collection of bottled beers is quite impressive.
Horseshoe Bar
Located at 17 Drury St at the city center, the Horseshoe Bar is the UK’s longest serving bar, dating back to the 19th century. It may not have as much glitz and glamour as other establishments, but the patrons are proud to say that this is where you’ll find the real Glasgow.
Waxy O'Connor's
Located at West George Street in the city center, Waxy O'Connor's has six bars and nine rooms on its three levels, all of them with an Irish theme. With so many steps and stairs running everywhere, it seems like one big labyrinthine maze. The wood beams make you feel like you’re drinking in a church or at some pub straight out of the “Lord of the Rings.”
