Getting around Glasgow
There are two international airports that service Glasgow: the Glasgow International Airport and the Glasgow Prestwick International Airport. Most major airlines use the Glasgow International Airport, except for Ryanair, which uses the Prestwick airport.
From the Glasgow International Airport, tourists can take a shuttle bus (£3.95) or a “railbus” (£2.50) to the city center. Taxis are also available, but there’s a huge fare difference for the 30-minute trip. From the Prestwick airport, travelers can take a taxi, the X77 bus or the airport’s railway station to get to the city center.
Once in Glasgow, tourists will find that the city boasts of one of the most extensive public transport systems in the UK. The underground subway system runs in a circle around the city and is easy to use. It has 15 stations at the west, south and center of the city. For traveling to surrounding towns, suburban trains are a tourist’s best option.
A bus is available every 10 minutes, but getting to a specific destination usually involves a change of buses and can be tricky. It’s better to take the subway if you can. However, if you’re dead-set on using the bus, purchase a copy of the Glasgow Mapmate which displays all bus routes. Buses require passengers to have the exact change.
There’s an abundance of taxis in Glasgow, and most drivers are friendly. Chatting with them can provide a wealth of useful information about the city. On the other hand, driving your own car can be a confusing experience since the city uses a one-way system. If you miss your turnoff, you can get very lost.
The easiest way to get around the city center is by foot. The streets are very pedestrian-friendly, with many crossings and walkways.
