Food Glorious Food in London

With thousands of restaurants in the city, finding the right place to dine can be a daunting task. Unfortunately, London is also one of the most expensive cities in the world to eat in. London's restaurants can be classified as budget (less than £10), mid-range (£10-40) and expensive (£40 and above).

For £3, diners can enjoy a good breakfast at a pub or cafeteria, £5 purchases two sandwiches and a soft drink, £6-7 buys a good pub meal or a sumptuous Chinese or Italian buffet, £10-£20 allows a diner to enjoy a fine French or Mediterranean meal with half a bottle of wine and over £50 allows diners to splurge in one of the city's best restaurants.

As a true global city, London offers cuisine from virtually every country in the world. These include areas with many restaurants dedicated to curries and Indian food (Brick Lane and Tooting), Chinese food (Soho), African and Caribbean food (Brixton), Jewish food (Golders Green) and Vietnamese food (Kingsland Road). Other restaurants dedicated to regional cuisine can be found all around the city.

London also hosts the usual roster of fast food chains that you will find in most world capitals. Among the most popular of these are the sandwich shops, which are the most popular places for lunch. However, for those that hate lines, the large supermarket chains such as Marks & Spencer, Sainsbury's and Tesco are also a good place to eat.

Many tourists are dying to dine at the restaurants of celebrity chefs they see on TV, such as Gordon Ramsay, who has eight restaurants in London, including Petrus, Boxwood Cafe, Maze and Foxtrot Oscar.

A word of caution: the prices of food tend to be inflated at restaurants located at major tourist attractions, especially along streets near the British Museum and Leicester Square. Many Londoners consider the city's steak houses as among its worst tourist traps and will not consider eating there.
