Colorful events in London
Although London has innumerable festivals, the city is not traditionally known for them, probably because there are already quite a number of exciting activities on its regular calendar of events as it is, including many colorful events filled with pomp and circumstance such as the Lord Mayor’s How and Trooping the Colour and other events revolving around the Thames River.
Among the most noteworthy events held regularly in London are the following:
1. Chelsea Flower Show
For five days in May every year, the Royal Horticultural Society takes center stage in London with fabulous show gardens and flower arrangements. The UK’s most famous flower show is held annually at the Royal Hospital Chelsea grounds.
2. The Championships, Wimbledon
It’s the oldest major championship in tennis and, to many, the most prestigious tennis tournament on the globe. For two weeks in June and July, the best tennis professionals in the world converge at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London.
3. The Proms
Does eight weeks of daily classical music concerts capture your fancy? That’s exactly what you have with The Henry Wood Promenade Concerts presented by the BBC: more than 70 concerts at the Royal Albert Hall in South Kensington, London.
4. The Boat Race
This annual race pitting Oxford University against Cambridge University draws a quarter of a million people to the Thames River every spring, aside from the nine million more who watch the event on TV.
5. Notting Hill Carnival
For two days every August, the spirit of the Caribbean takes hold of Notting Hill in this annual event that has been held since 1965.
