So much to see and do in London
No city in the world is quite like London. Huge and modern yet traditional and historical, London is not only the capital of England and the United Kingdom. It's a global capital of fashion, entertainment and culture.
London stands out for its sights, sounds and non-stop activity, especially where entertainment is concerned. There is just so much to see and do in this grand city that exhilarates and intimidates. Only a handful of cities truly answer to the cliché "something for everyone" and London is one of them. Think of any activity under the sun, and you'll likely find it in London.
Historically, London was a Roman City surrounded by a wall and nicknamed the "Square Mile." Since the 19th century, the name "London" has been taken to refer to the entire metropolis that surrounds the original City of London. Meanwhile, the urban sprawl surrounding central London and encompassing 32 boroughs became known as Greater London.
Greater London has a population of 7.5 million while metropolitan London has a population of 14 million people. Despite being densely populated, one of the great things about London is that it still has large open areas and parklands.
London has a distinct global identity as home of the Queen, Big Ben and double-deck buses. New images of London will certainly be formed by 2012 when the city hosts the 30th Summer Olympic Games for an unprecedented third time. It also hosted the Olympic Games in 1908 and 1948.
London is truly one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, and tourism continues to grow stronger every year thanks to the thriving economy.
