Fast facts for Southampton
Southampton is a lively university town in the county of Hampshire. Southampton is probably best known for being one of the busiest ports in the United Kingdom. Southampton Port is also the most prestigious port for cruise ships departing from the United Kingdom. The famous ill-fated Titanic set sail from Southampton on her maiden voyage on the 5th April 1912. As we all know she never made it to her destination of New York.
If you don't have time for a cruise then why not take a one hour tour of the docks with Blue Funnel Cruises or take the ferry to Hythe which is a pleasant 15 minute trip
Southampton city centre is very compact and you can walk from one end to the other in a little over 30 minutes. The city centre runs from the Town Quay on the harbour front to the Civic Centre which is just off of bar street which is Southampton's main shopping area.
If you are in the city centre then start from the Town Quay and the maritime museum. There are plenty of artefacts relating to the Titanic here as well as models of the QE2
Southampton is great for shopping and you should head for West Quay shopping centre. Its a huge undercover shopping centre with all of the regular high street shops, department stores plus some speciality shops.
The high street is full of pubs, cafes and bars and being a university town you can be sure that most nights are busy but especially Monday nights are busy when the bars and clubs have student nights which means cheap drinks!
