Las Vegas festivals
Las Vegas has its share of big events and festivals, including New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Day (January), President's Day (February), Easter (March), Halloween (October), Thanksgiving (November) and Christmas. However, the biggest events that attract the biggest crowds are mostly gambling or sports-related. Every time a major sporting event unfolds, Las Vegas is a hive of activity.
The following are some of the biggest events in Las Vegas.
Gambling
It’s the number one reason why people come to Las Vegas and still the main reason why the city shines on the world stage. People can gamble virtually everywhere in Las Vegas, even at the airport and some supermarkets. However, gamblers have to be at least 21 years old to play.
Getting Married
While known mainly for its gambling, Las Vegas is also the wedding capital of the world. There are many wedding chapels in the city, even on the Las Vegas strip. Weddings can be elaborate themed ceremonies or simple affairs. Most hotels and chapels offer packages for lavish weddings. Couples should first get a marriage license at the County Clerk’s Office.
CineVegas
Every June since 1998, Las Vegas has hosted its own film festival at the Palms Casino Resort and CineVegas keeps growing in prestige and popularity every year. It was recently recognized by Variety magazine as one of the “top five gem festivals.” Annually, CineVegas features the world premiere of major films and shines the spotlight on some of the best of independent cinema. There are plenty of parties, interviews, panel discussions and awards. Recent honorees have included Anthony Hopkins, Jack Nicholson, and Sean Penn.
World Series of Poker
The World Series of Poker is the biggest poker event in the world, encompassing over 50 large poker tournaments where millions of dollars in prizes are at stake. It’s usually held in July at the Rio Hotel and Casino just off the Las Vegas Strip. The highlight of the tournament is the $10,000 Texas Hold ‘Em Main Event where the world champion of poker is crowned. The winner of the tournament in 2007, Jerry Yang, pocketed over $8 million.
