New York City transport

New York City has three major airports: two international airports (John F. Kennedy International Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport) and one domestic airport (LaGuardia Airport). Its international airports service travelers from virtually everywhere in the world.

Traveling from any of the airports to midtown New York takes around 90 minutes minimum because of the city’s notorious traffic jams.

Foreign tourists can take a taxi, limousine/car service, coach services, subway, commuter rail or bus from the airport to the city center. Taxis are the most popular option. The only other transport option available 24 hours a day is the subway.

If you’re in a rush and need to avoid traffic, you have only one option: helicopter. From JFK or Newark, a ride on US Helicopter to midtown New York takes nine minutes.

Once in the city, tourists can get around on taxis or trains, buses or subways and their own two feet.

The subway is a quick and efficient way to get around New York City's outer boroughs and most of Manhattan. Subway entrances are usually located at street corners with a descending staircase. All stations prominently display helpful maps of their route. New York City buses are not as efficient or as quick as the subway, but they do provide a more picturesque view of New York.

Fares for the subway and bus are the same: US$2 per trip. Travelers may avail of a one-day pass for US$7.50 and get unlimited use of buses and the subway for a day. They may also get a MetroCard worth $25, $47 and $81 for unlimited subway and bus use for one week, two weeks and one month, respectively.

Once they get a hang of the city, a lot of tourists opt to travel by taxi or rent a car.
