New York City
There are many reasons why New York City is special. It’s a global center for art, culture, fashion, food, media, finance and trade. It’s an influential force in world affairs, acknowledged as the Capital of the World. It even has the most famous skyline in the world, starring the Empire State Building. But New York City is special because of something you can’t even see, a kind of buzz and electricity that you can’t find anywhere else in the world.
If you can make it there, you can make it anywhere, so says the song.
If it’s your first time in the Big Apple, the city can be overwhelming. But it usually doesn’t take tourists long to feel at home n New York City. That’s one of the unique things about New York City: what it has to offer is huge and new, yet also old and familiar.
Located at the mouth of the Hudson River, New York City bridges three states: New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. The city’s metropolitan area is the largest in the USA. With a population of 18.7 million, it is the fifth largest city in the world behind Tokyo, Sao Paulo, Mexico City and Seoul.
New York City has five separate boroughs, each with its own unique culture and personality:
Manhattan
Located between the Hudson River and East River, Manhattan Island is a veritable melting point for diverse ethnic cultures.
Brooklyn
The borough with the largest population seems like a separate city. Located across the East River, Brooklyn is famous for its beaches, artists and Coney Island.
Queens
Located south of Brooklyn, Queens is famous for New York’s two international airports, the USA’s second largest Chinatown and the professional baseball franchise, New York Mets.
The Bronx
It’s located north of Manhattan and famous for the Bronx Zoo and the professional baseball franchise, New York Yankees.
Staten Island
Located south of Manhattan, this huge island at the harbor is a suburban area unlike the rest of the city. It’s the closest borough to New Jersey.
