Should mobile phones be allowed to be used on flights?

Postby selamistanbul on Thu Jul 03, 2008 11:41 am

For years we have been asked to switch off our mobile phones on aircraft. The reason being that the phones interfear with the aircraft communication systems etc.....

Apart from the obvious safety reasons for mobile phones to be kept off....Mobile phones should also be kept switched off for the comfort of passengers.

Now it seems that aircraft companies are going to be allowed to let passengers used their mobile phones durinmg flights!

I wonder what other people think about this? Personally I really cant believe that no one can survive without their mobile during a flight.

I cant believe that they are considering to allow mobile phones on aircraft. I took a short flight at the weekend and the safety announcement clearly stated to turn off mobile phones because they interfere with flight equipment!

I just read on a Blog site that Dubai airlines have installed technology, which allows passengers to make calls and send SMS text messages via their mobile phones during flights, on a Boeing 777-300 !

Would be nice to get some clarification....

Quoted from travel Weekly ...

Permission for passengers to use mobile phones while flying has moved closer as communications watchdog Ofcom licensed their use on aircraft.

Ryanair is keen to fit its fleet with technology allowing calls and texts in the air and other airlines are carrying out trials.

However, Ofcom noted a number of concerns, not least that passengers may face "unexpectedly high bills". Ofcom said it would take steps "to ensure consumers understand the costs of making calls from aircraft".

It also noted "concerns about passenger welfare and the potential for discomfort, anti-social behaviour and air rage", and said mobile use would require security clearance. Mobile phones have been used to trigger bombs.

Their use in the air still requires approval from the European Commission, the Civil Aviation Authority and other safety regulators.

Do bear in mind that anyone using a mobile phone on a plane will have their call more than likely transmitted over the pilots radio frequency so could be a little off putting for him! That could cetrainly be the cause of an accident!!!

Other causes of accidents will come from angry passengers who dont want to listen to you whittering on.....

Im sure any call can wait till you land.....

I think its a ridiculous idea to have phones on planes not due to the safety issue but how annoying will it be to be sat by some idiot talking on his phone through out a flight..

We all moan about screaming kids its no different...

Its bad enough when your sat on a bus or coach trying to have a sleep and someones shouting down a phone..

An in-flight mobile phone service has become available on board 20 Ryanair aircraft.

Over the next 18 months all Ryanair aircraft will permit passengers to make and receive mobile calls and texts on all flights.

Passengers on Ryanair’s 20 OnAir enabled aircraft, mainly operatng from Dublin, can now make and receive voice calls at (non–EU) international roaming rates (£1.50-£3 per minute) text messages (40p+) and email (£1-£2) using mobile phones, BlackBerrys and other smartphones.

The price tariffs are set by each mobile service provider and are subject to each customer’s individual price plan, according to the airline

I was on a domestic flighht at the weekend. Why would they still ask passengers to switch off their mobile phones during the flight if they do not interfere with the plane's equipment. It's totally unecessary to use your phone on a flight and the person next to me was making me crazy because he kept using his phone when he through no one was looking and then hiding it under his jacket when the stewardess walked past! It just leads to air rage ! ARRGH!

I think they should only be used for half an hour before landing so you can inform those who are meeting you, your arrival time. Maybe when the sign when to put your safety belts on is displayed. Otherwise NO.NO. I don`t want to be sat next to some nerd constantly talking into his mobile. Long distance travel many people prefer to sleep, I think this in an intrusion into peoples comfort.Cheap flights
