"Stay here for the breakfast/half pension"
The hotel is close to the subway. The half pension is a great deal (just compare to the prices on the menu)! The restaurant has one of the best wine selections in the city. One point to note, though, is that there is no air-conditioning. We enjoyed the breakfast buffet. It looked like the desserts they served at breakfast were the same as the desserts on the dessert cart for dinner. The coffee was outstanding. The best thing about breakfast was that it was served outside in their flower-filled garden/patio. The furnishings in the room were also very nice. This a top-class restaurant which also functions as a hotel.

"taste of traditional Vienna"
We stayed here for four nights in March 2004 and would agree much more with Frommer's than with the previous reviewer. The Altwienerhof's neighbourhood is really nothing to be frightened of at all - it is just an ordinary Viennese suburb where respectable if not wealthy people live and work. This is part of the charm of the hotel, which is very typical of everyday Vienna in decor and style of management as well as setting. It is only about 100 metres from the underground and also on a convenient and frequent bus route to the Ringstrasse, so that you can easily get to any central location in 30 minutes if you are happy to use public transport, which is safe and efficient. The decor is quite old fashioned, but in a very traditional Viennese Biedermeier style, and all is very clean and well kept. We had a very impressive amount of space for the low room rate we paid. Management style is very friendly and relaxed, especially Frau Keller, the proprietress, who is warm and chatty and eager to help people enjoy their stay in Vienna. Her husband has been unwell, and the restaurant, which has one of the highest reputations in Vienna has therefore been closed for a while, but will apparently be reopening in April 2004.

"Hospitality, old world charm, great value in Vienna!"
The Altwienerhof exudes classic Viennese style. Frau Kellner and all the staff we encountered were friendly, helpful and welcoming. The hotel is a bit outside the Ring, but an easy 10 minute commuting distance to the city center. The rooms were incredibly spacious, with wonderful sitting areas. Breakfast was superb with many fresh, nutritious choices and was served in a beautiful indoor garden (we were there in the winter). Frau Kellner helped us secure tickets for the Spanish Riding School and the Opera before we arrived. She also helped us with suggestions of 'must see' sights in Vienna as well as give us directions and specifics about using public transportation. We were completely comfortable in the neighborhood, day or night. We were there in March 2004 and the weather was cold and snowy. It was very easy to get anywhere we needed to go from this location. At the time we were there, the restaurant was not open, so I have no comment about that. This family has been running this Hotel for many years and the dedication, pride and love for their establishment shines through in every facet of the Altwienerhof. I look forward to staying there on my next trip to Vienna.
