"it still has that wow factor after all those years"
The last few reviews have not exactly been great, but truthfully this place is still the best place to go in Phuket. Yes it is expensive and I think people do expect for the money the world at their disposal, but what makes this place is the subtle things.
I have been there twice and at different times of the year (low season and high season) and it really does attract vastly different types of people. If you can go in High season and avoid the arrogant champagne swigging eastern europeans.
The rooms are looking a bit on the old size and they are going to get re-furbed quite soon, but they are in a traditional thai style and they are clean.
The new spa is expensive but good with and the food at the restaurants is excellent. The beach bbqs are a must and they have a huge fleet of boats at your disposal.
The beach is also the best on the island and the next door Chedi hotel is also an excellent alternative choice.
Overall a excellent hotel, looking a bit dated but all those celebrities and royalty that still go along can't be too wrong.

"Elegance is an art"
Every detail is sophisticated. Very elegant villa. Very nice staff. Wonderful Thai food (Italian restaurant have no interest). What else ? no TV , no flat screen , no, it is not a place for "nouveau riche".

"Outstanding Resort"
My wife and I went here back in March of 2005 after the Tsunami and had a wonderful time. I can't say enough about the quality of the service and the rooms. This is the only Aman resort we have been to, so we really don't have a basis for comparison within the chain, but we have stayed at many other top end hotels/resorts and this one ranks up there among the best. Different travelers have different expectations, but I thoroughly enjoyed how the staff was there when you needed them, and then would disappear, only to reappear when you needed them. I'm not the kind of guy who likes the staff to constantly be swooping in to coddle me, so if that's your preference, you may be disappointed. I found this resort to be very relaxing, exceptionally well kept, and high quality. The food was very good. We thoroughly enjoyed the Thai longhouse we lived in. The staff always placed fresh fruit in the room and decorated it with the most beautiful orchids. The bathrooms were wonderful, the beds comfortable, and the teak wood interiors offered a very warm finish. All in all, no complaints. It's been a while since we've been there, but I still recommend it to my friends who are traveling in the region.
