LOCATION

Next door to the Arcotel Velvet Hotel is the legendary Tacheles, an alternative cultural centre with a long history. And just around the corner of the hotel are the famous Hackescher Markt, the Museum Island with the world famous Pergamon museum, Shopping at Friedrich Strasse, the Nikolai Quarter, the Alexander, the Brandenburg Gate and numerous other sights. All these attractions are within walking distance from the hotel.

Berlin was almost bombed out of existence during World War II, its streets reduced to piles of rubble, its parks to muddy swampland. But the optimistic spirit and strength of will of the remarkable Berliners enabled them to survive not only the wartime destruction of their city, but also its postwar division, symbolized by the Berlin Wall.

PROPERTY AMENITIES

* Every morning from 6.30 a.m. until 11 a.m. you will be served a delicious breakfast buffet in the restaurant.

* Lutter and Wegner:
Branch of small chain bearing name of famed Berlin restaurant opened in 1811 and closed after WW II until the 1990s. Traditional Austrian, Berliner, and contemporary German cuisines. Breakfast buffet daily. Lunch/dinner menu served until midnight, with bar open to 1 AM. 350-selection wine list, with bottles available to go. Deli cases with antipasti, European cured meats, and cheeses. Dark-wood chairs with maroon-leather seats. Natural-maple tabletops, rustic wood floor, green-and-white striped ceiling. Wine-rack walls. Glass front open in summer. Sidewalk picnic tables and heaters under green umbrellas.

* Velvet Bar:
Cocktail-and-coffee bar/lounge open noon to midnight. Sushi-and-appetizer menu. Red-and-black leather seating. Banquette backed by wall-mirror and sheer curtains. Venetian chandeliers. Projection TV on white wall. Glass front open in summer. Sidewalk tables and heaters under green awnings.

* The hotel's bar/lounge contains two computers with complimentary high-speed Internet connections. Self-parking is available in a public lot two blocks away.

ROOM AMENITIES

* The hotel offers 85 air-conditioned guestrooms and suites in a contemporary eight-story building with a glass facade. Rooms and suites feature all-glass fronts overlooking the lively day-and-night, restaurant-and-bar scene along Oranienburger Strasse. Red drapes and white sheer curtains provide privacy. Flat-screen, 17-inch televisions and DVD/CD players with remote controls offer entertainment. (Rental DVDs are available at the reception desk.)

* Built-in desks with red-leather tops, horizontal mirrors, side-light illumination, and black-leather stools supply working space. Desks include multiple electrical outlets as well as high-speed and dial-up Internet connections. Each room or suite contains a cell-phone-size cordless telephone.

* Beds include down comforters and hypo-allergenic pillows, have headboards with the same design as desks: tall, heavy, dark-wood frames containing red-leather insets, horizontal mirrors, and built-in reading lights. Walls and ceilings are white. Carpets are two-tone red. Each room and suite has a little wall-mounted rack holding two apples.
