"Excellent and very comfortable"
Hotel exceeded our expectations. - Room was spacious and bathroom was very new and clean. - Very comfy beds, and you get used to the trams pretty quickly. - Helpful staff. - Pleasant walk to/from town. If its too much exercise (or too cold!!) then the tram goes almost to the door from Wenceslas Square via the main train station. Really enjoyed the stay, and would definately stay again.

"Brilliant holiday"
My friend and I(both 18) are just back from a 2 night break at this hotel. The hotel is clean, tidy, staff are friendly and beds are comfortable. The hotel is located about a five-ten minute walk from the main attractions of the old town squaer and wenceslaus square, there are trams that leave from just outside the hotel but we found the walk easy so didnt use them. The hotel is very quiet and it is mainly older couples that we found to be staying. The hotel ask that there is silence between 10pm and 7am which everybody seemed to recognise although we never heard any of the other guests. I would recommend that you use the supermarkets just down from the hotel as they are cheaper than the ones in the centre, also do not use the bottle of water that the hotel leaves in your room as the charge lots more than the supermarkets about. The chinese restaurant just over the road and down a bit serves very good food and is also very cheap. Hope you have as great a time as we had, it was amazing!!

"A great winter break"
18-22nd Jan 2005 We arrived at about 9 pm after a flight from Cardiff and CEDAZ direct to the hotel. We had a room on the top floor, clean, comfortable and pleasant. The English speaking desk clerk gave us several suggestions for places to eat and we took the easy option in going to the Einstein Pizzeria, two doors up. Yes, the food had italian names but was fresh and cooked in an original Czech way-delicious. As we ended our meal. we looked out and saw soft fat flakes of snow falling. Breakfast at the hotel HAS to be followed by a walk- in order to compensate for extra breakfast that you just have to eat. The hotel is within easy reach of all the tourist sites and (according to the pedometer) we walked on average about 8 miles a day! However- we were quite unaware of the distance and had gone prepared with sturdy footwear- a must for the cobbles. I felt quite superior in my walking boots when I saw other ladies mincing along in their stilettos trying desperately not to come a cropper! We found a place we really liked for the evening, the Spirit Bar, (turn right out of hotel then right again and down the hill) We think it is mainly a student bar, but this didn't put us off and we were very well received and tried to work our way through the menu. We tried garlic soup, sausages as well as more conventional items like fish and chips. Even with beer, wine, coffees liquers etc, I don't think we paid more than about 15 for the two of us. In the city, we found a very reasonable bar for lunches. the Toburk, just off Hybernska, near the station. Excellent goulash and dumplings. Besides the main tourist sites, for something really atmospheric and serious, visit the Church of St Cyril and St Methodus near Charles Square. This is where in 1942, after the assassination of Heydrich, the resistance fighters holed up. We then made a visit out to Lidice, where the reprisal massacre took place. Prepare to be moved. it is without doubt the most overpoweringly emotional site I have ever visited. We were the only visitors on a bleak, cold and snowy morning, but were made very welcome at the museum. We walked into the new village for some Frankfurter soup and coffee to warm up. When we enquired on how to get to Lidice, the hotel clerk prepared us a complete set of instructions, timetables ets. No 26 tram from hotel to Devicka, then the bus to Lidice. All for about 1.50 return on an excelent public transport system. All in all, a super winter break, we booked everything ourselves and felt a sense of achievement in doing so. The hotel is excellent value with friendly helpful staff.

Quite happy with it
We stayed at the Ariston Hotel last July for a couple of nights. At first, I was a bit disappointed but after our stay, I just realised the hotel was just what we needed. If you are looking to spend a lot of time at the hotel, choose another one. Room was clean and decent, nice shower. If what you want is a base, what is to say, somewhere decent to sleep and shower and have breakfast, then the Ariston is your choice. Always remember that the hotels are awarded stars as per the country's rating, so a 3 star in Prague is not a 3 star somewhere else. Hotel is about a 20 min walk from city centre (we never caught the tram! always walked!) and the fact that the weather was lovely, helped making the stroll even more pleasant. Had dinner at the Old Town Square restaurants both nights and it was great. About 1000 ck for 2 starters, 2 main courses and 2 large beers! Staff at hotel were nice and pleasant. Must compliment the Czechs on their beer and food. Charles bridge is amazing and Wenceslas Square quite shocking thanks to the clash between old Prague and new capitalist Prague! As it was so warm at night, we had to open window to sleep and the noise of the trams passing by and the noise coming out of the bar across the road (Herna) made it a bit difficult to sleep, but not hotel's fault!

Good value for money
Follow all the advice on getting from the airport to the hotel: Cedaz taxi service worked very well on our first vist to Prague. The hotel was very clean and the staff were polite and helpful. Breakfast was sufficient but nothing special. Although the hotel lacked atmosphere and the evening facilities were non existant the hotel was good value for the mony. The hotel is a 20 minute walk from the centre and the tram service is very efficient (but watch out for pick-pockets and keep your hands on your valuables!). Explore the area around the hotel; the TV tower with the giant babies climbing up it is a few minutes away and is the highest point in Prague. The war museum is also close by and is well worth a visit with modern displays and much more interesting than some other reviews seem to suggest. Also visit the castle, (a whole day needed to take full advantage of the sights), Petron Hill, and at least one opera (Don Giovanni at the Estates Theatre was excellent!). Stop for goulash in the Municipal House cafe. Enjoy!

Pickpockets trouble reasonable hotel
Just returned from the Ariston (Ziskov area) in Prague. The hotel warns all guests that there is currently great risk on the tram of pickpockets. The hotel staff told us it has been very bad the last couple of weeks. We met two other guests who had been robbed. But the vague warnings of pickpockets “on the tram” fail to adequately explain what tourists are up against. The technique of the local gang is this. They let one of a pair of tourists board the tram. Then two of them push ahead of you up the two steps of the tram, where they stop blocking you from boarding. They are well dressed, except for baseball caps. Now a third person pushes in from the side leading with a satchel to block you from view. Finally a fourth completes the press from the other side and you are pinned. It feels like other passengers, pushing at you, desperate to board before the klaxon sounds and the doors close. Then the klaxon sounds, the two in front of you leap back off the tram and you stumble on. As the door closes, you have only seconds to check your pockets and probably fortunately, insufficient time to consider diving back through the door. The hotel clerk repeated that everyone was warned and should never carry any valuables. He did not seem interested in my suggestion that he inform the Police that I had seen the same people carrying out the manoeuvre on Wednesday and Friday night at the same tram stop down from the Ariston. Annoying that it could so easily be cleared up by a camera in the tram or plain clothes police. Of course, we took to walking, but I cannot say we felt safe. The route to town is under a motorway and then under the main railway. Knowing that the criminals operate in groups makes most normal precautions seem inadequate. The hotel itself was OK, though we found the level of noise too great in our original room on the front street. Trams make more noise that I expected pulling up the hill. We were moved to a lower spec, but quieter room with no trouble. Breakfast was not great quality, but adequate in quantity and taken in a theatre below the hotel, which was a first. The local restaurant SKLEP a couple of hundred yards down from the hotel was excellent value and had a no smoking back conservatory.
