quality 2-star hotel
When we decided to visit Inverewe Gardens in Poolewe, we found that accommodation in August (we needed two double rooms) was pretty hard to find as most places were booked up. But we managed to book rooms at the Aultbea Hotel, which is in a tiny village on the shore of Loch Ewe. As it is only a 2-star establishment, we were not sure what kind of standard to expect and we were a little worried that it might turn out to be a dump. In fact, it was much better than anticipated. We had a superior room - an extra £10 per night but it was a very large room with a king-size bed overlooking Loch Ewe. Our friends had a standard room at £76 per night, which was a good bit smaller but was still perfectly adequate. While the beds were comfortable, the bathrooms were very old-fashioned with green suites! But they were clean and had electric showers. I do wish that hotels would fit shower screens instead of curtains. Breakfasts were plentiful, without being extravagant. There was a limited choice of cereals and yoghurts and plenty of fresh fruit. The cooked breakfasts were good but restricted to the basics - bacon, egg, sausage, mushrooms. There was no fish choice, which was surprising as the restaurant specialises in fish. I'd have expected kippers or smoked haddock to be on offer. Meals were available in the lounge bar, the informal bistro or the dining room. There was a good choice of seafood but apart from that the menu was not extensive. The food was good enough with the exception of the venison stew, which we all thought tasted a little strange though perfectly edible. All in all, we thought this was a reasonable quality 2-star hotel that represented good value for money and we'd stay there again if we were in the area. The scenery around there is fantastic but, if you're not into walking or other outdoors pursuits yoyu wouldn't find much to enjoy.
