Balmoral Hotel Balmoral Hotel Balmoral Hotel

  Hotel Information

One of the most luxurious hotels in Scotland...

Five-star Balmoral Hotel combines the noble character of a Scottish baronial home and the classic sophistication of an international hotel. The hotel is one of the most luxurious hotels in Scotland, is in the heart of Edinburgh, close to the shops, next to Edinburgh central railway station and 20 minutes by car from Edinburgh Airport.

For a century, this hotel and its soaring clock tower have dominated Princes Street. In addition to the central location, an eclectic mix of today’s minimalism and yesteryear’s opulence appeals to both business and leisure guests. Original brass candelabras, fluted columns, and a marble fireplace set a traditional back-drop for modern unframed canvasses and orchids in steel vases. Kilted doorstaff and bagpipers add to the Scottish atmosphere.

It provides the ideal accommodation from which to enjoy the many events held in Edinburgh, including the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, or simply to relax and unwind. Balmoral Hotel is also home to a variety of bar's and restaurants, which are guaranteed to offer something for every occasion.
LOCATION

Balmoral Hotel is located in the heart of the city at 1 Princes Street, overlooking Edinburgh Castle, The Balmoral's majestic clock tower is an Edinburgh landmark which can be seen from all around. Given that the hotel is adjacent to the station, the clock is always set two minutes fast to ensure people don't miss their trains - except on New Year's Eve of course!
PROPERTY AMENITIES

* Number One Restaurant :
In keeping with the hotels objective to pick only the best chefs to work for the hotel , the hotel appointed Michelin star chef Jeff Bland to preside over "Number One" restaurant. Number One is one of Scotland's most highly acclaimed restaurants and is famous for the award-wining cuisine and elegant setting. He places emphasis on using local produce, and the best of British ingredients to produce highly creative Scottish dishes.

* Hadrian's Restaurant :
Hadrian's is an alternative to Number One, a restaurant for chic, cosmopolitan dining at reasonable prices. It is the first restaurant in Edinburgh to be truly influenced by the London scene in terms of image, atmosphere and cuisine. The interior has a distinct 1930s art deco influence, decorated with a palate of lime and walnut, with a splash of African violet. The combination of colours was inspired by the natural landscapes of Edinburgh, taking the Salisbury Crags, sea and sky as influences.

* Palm Court:
Classic lounge bar refurbished in 2004. Traditional décor infused with modern accents such as backlit mahogany panels, bijou armchairs, and oversized floor lamps. Giant Corinthian columns; light sculpture hanging from leaded-glass dome. Harpist featured Friday – Saturday afternoons; replaced by pianist in evenings. Drinks and lighter fare served all day; famous afternoon tea offered as well.

* NB’s:
Pub-like bar with photographs celebrating Scottish rugby and football. Sports and music videos broadcast on four TVs. Beverages served daily from noon to late evening; soup and sandwiches at lunchtime.

* Guests have complimentary access to an on-site health club, open every day from early morning to late evening. Facilities include a 12-person steam room, five-person sauna, and aerobics/dance studio; gym with free weights, 14 cardio machines, and seven resistance machines. There is also a 49-foot lap pool surrounded by recliners. Five spa treatment rooms are open daily as well and offer women’s and men’s changing rooms; lockers, hairdryers, and showers.

* The 24-hour business center has two PCs with high-speed Internet access and a printer. Ten meeting rooms--including a ballroom with castle views--can accommodate groups of up to 350.

"would stay there again in a heartbeat"
Balmoral Hotel's food was excellent and the staff looked after us really well. Breakfast next morning was pretty good too!! I would stay there again in a heartbeat. All the staff we met were helpful and courteous and my overall view of the city was that it was a wonderful place for a city break and the people were very, very friendly. Fallon & Grant, Oslo

"Highly recommended"
We stayed at the Balmoral for 3 nights in August 2007 and were very pleased with both the service and our room. The staff was attentive, polite, very helpful and eager to assist us at all times. The breakfast was excellent, the room was very large and beautiful (at standard rates), with a very large bathroom. Room service was excellent. The location is unbeatable and the hotel exterior is itself a landmark. We will definitely revisit the Balmoral. Worth every penny and highly recommended!!

"Incredible experience, can't wait to return"
We just returned from an amazing stay at the Balmoral. The staff treated us like honored guests from the moment we arrived. They were superb, particularly the concierge and management staff. We stayed during their most busy season while all the festivals were going on. We gave them some very difficult to get show requests, some very spontaneously and last minute and they came through for us. They also got us into all of the toughest restaurants. We booked a classic suite and were upgraded to a grand suite for an eight night stay. The suite was amazing and the difference (much bigger with a powder room as well as the main bath) was much appreciated. I have read some of the other reviews on this site. We regularly stay (30+ nights /year )at U.S. Four Seasons properties so I do understand what others are speaking of when they don't feel the maintenance of the property is exactly five star. It does not have that squeaky clean, shiny fresh, newly painted feeling. We actually had a fire drill and had to take the back stairs and indeed it was pretty worn. However, for us, the incredible and sincere service more than made up for this. This is a very highly trafficked area of the city. The Balmoral is in a perfect location where you can walk to both the new and old towns in Edinburgh. Hadrien's was a good, easy restaurant choice. We did not try Number One b/c we wanted more of a scene/action and it was very quiet. We paid 675 pounds or $1300+ for our room and we will definitely be returning to Edinburgh. That is pricey so we did look into all the other five star contenders while we were there. There is nothing in Edinburgh that compares with the Balmoral. We have fond memories and will stay at the Balmoral during our next visit.

"Keep up the good work"
Had a very enjoyable time at the Balmoral. Everything from the valet parking on arrival, check-in, room (quiet room as requested when booking), concierge, to housekeeping and room service was faultless. I hope they keep up the good work as we plan to return again next year.

"Wonderful hotel!"
This was one of the best hotels I ever stayed in! The rooms are luxurious and beautifully decorated. They are spotlessly clean and have a maid service twice daily. The price is a bit steep, but it was worth every penny. From the wonderful kilt-clad doormen to the well-mannered and helpful staff through to the fantastic Number One restaurant - I just couldn't find fault with anything! I recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Edinburgh, and I will definitely stay there again!

"Somethings changed...customer service improved hugely"
Its our fourth stay at the balmoral over the last 3 years. Previously theres been little to complain about, but not huge amounts to praise either. I am not sure what happened this time the staff were just amazing. From the friendly greeting from the folks at reception who saw us straight to our room and took us personally, to the concierge who booked us a table at the Witchery with 20 mins notice, to the room service staff who were friendly and helpful. Everyone was absolutely great and it raised our short break from being just another trip to a memorable experience....thnx really enjoyrd it, and hopefully keep it up

"Tierra del Sol...Most luxurious place to stay."
Staying at Tierra Del Sol is like staying at a country club that is cozy and comfy. The only 18 hole golf course on the island. When u stay at Tierra, golf is free! You can stay in a condo or a private villa with your own pool or jacuzzi or pay less and go to Tierra's pool or the beach. There are also estate looking homes on the golf course you can stay in. beautiful picturesque views. We stayed in a private 3 bathroom, 2 bathroom bedroom villa and it was so nice and relaxing. Beautiful golf course view. You have all the amenidies of home plus daily maid service, your own washer and dryer, a fully loaded kitchen, living room, dining room, plus a garage. We always rent a car when in Aruba! You can order in room service from the restaurants at Tierra or you can even order in pizza from the island pizza places!!! My very favorite restaurant on the island is called El Gaucho's. It is a must eat at place, but you need to make reservations if your going there during holiday season. The ribs there are delicious and the steaks are amazing. I also tried and LOVED the lamb loin. The best part is the caramel crepes dessert. The weather in Aruba is so predictable and 99% of the time the days are 85-86 degrees, beautiful and sunny! That is why we have gone there the last 3 yrs in a row and already have plans to return!!! You can check out their website at (---). Hope that helps!

"Beautiful Property, Would definitely go back"
I must say, after reading some of the reviews I was hesitant to stay at this resort but I was pleasantly surprised. From start to finish we had a great time. The check-in was very easy. We rented a 2 bedroom villa. It was a great llittle house with a private pool. It was clean, well stocked with dishes, silverware, condiments, pots and pans. We cooked breakfast each morning and ate our other meals out. We played golf three days in a row. it was a beautiful course. One of our friends used the spa and thought it was delightful. It's a bit of a hike in to town, you would definitely need a car rental but the folks at Tierra del Sol are happy to help with that. We were concerned about luggage but they sent a large van to pick up golf clubs and suitcases. There are two restaurants on propery, one is more like a 19th hole lunch and drink place. We enjoyed a few "Aruba Riba's" their tropical drink of the Island. We ate at the main restaurant the final night and the food was fabulous. Great presentation, supberb service, and you can eat inside or out. We loved it and would definitely return! Everyone we met at the resort was very pleasant. The only negative was the distance between the villas and the main hotel. Since we only had one car for four of us it was a bit of an inconvience if anyone wanted to do something different. It is a great place to relax and enjoy a little golf.

"Fantastic!"
stayed at the Balmoral in May and I have to admit it is in the top three hotels i have ever stayed in. The location is unbeatable and the facade of the building is amazing. It is very modern inside, in decoration and the rooms are a great size - i had a deluxe twin for £200 and it fit two leather armchairs, two queen beds, a chaise lon, dek and TV unit with loads of space to spare and high ceilings. Admittedly, it is pricey - but it is a luxury stay and the staff are second to none. Not overbearing like so many other big hotels - just out for the tips, the people here are genuinely friendly and very hepful. The Breakfast buffet is gorgeous too! Highly recommended.

"What you expect from a five star!"
A great hotel! Beautiful suite with nice views. Outstanding service from all the members of the hotel staff. Excellent location for arrival by train, and seeing the sites of both the old and new cities. Afternoon tea in the room was delicious. We even got a complimentary bottle of wine and fruit in our room.

"Wonderful Hotel, Amazing Service"
My husband and I were in Scotland for a long weekend. After a disastrous evening in the Scotsman Hotel, we checked into The Balmoral Hotel for the remaining 3 nights. All I can say is 'wow'! The service was amazing, very courteous from the instant we walked in the door. The rooms were comfortable, exactly the type of 'Old Scotland' we were hoping for. The first night we had champagne in the Bollinger Bar. We also experienced Hadrian's and Number One restaurant with no complaints. I had a couple of treatments in the spa on the second day. When we wanted to see the sites of Edinburgh, the staff were more than obliging and arranged a couple of tours for us. My husband and I retired several years ago and have been traveling all over the world since. This hotel has to have been one of the best experiences we've had. I couldn't recommend it enough to people visiting Edinburgh.
