At the centre of Broadway is Barcelo Lyon Arms, a traditional family inn rich in history and charm. Gazing into a huge and ancient log-burning open fireplace, you can easily drift back in time to a very different England. The Broadway parish register has the first reference to The Inn in 1532 . In the 17th century, it served both sides of the Civil War - Oliver Cromwell stayed here before the decisive battle of Worcester in 1651 (Cromwell Room where Oliver Cromwell spent the night below left) and Charles I also used The Inn to meet his supporters.

"A real treat"
My fiance and I spent the weekend at the Lygon Arms on our way to a friend's wedding and as a 30th birthday treat for me. I was apprehensive becuase of the other reviews that mention renovation works, but there were no workmen in sight/ earshot. It was clear that only part of the hotel had been refurbished and there was a marked difference between the new bits and the older, rather tired decor. We had a room in the newly refurbished part of the hotel. Our room was tastefully decorated and had a lovely bright , spacious and modern bathroom with an outside window. The bedroom was very comfortable and plush, with a red rose and box of chocolates waiting for us. The only minor criticism is that our room was not particularly spacious and had a small very window and 'atmospheric' lighting, so a little more overhead lighting wouldn't have gone amiss. I thoroughouly recommend using the spa (the La Stone therapy was wonderful!). Staff treated us like kings and ran around after our every need. Breakfast was a leisurely affair and we never felt rushed even though we were the last two in the dining room. We didn't eat in the hotel, but can recommend The Swan for upmarket pub food. We'd definitely go again.

"Great"
We stayed at this Hotel last summer and were very pleased, from looking at some of the reviews. We booked on a late deal but paid extra for a deluxe room -m definitely worth the extra as some of the basic rooms resembled 'Crossroads'. Our room was in one of the cottages at the back and was absolutely delightful. My only criticism would be the spa/treatments - I called a week before to book a massage but was told that nothing doing which I found very disappointing. Although we used the pool often it would have been nice to have some treatments, but I was told they are booked weeks ahead by locals. Overall though I found the Hotel wonderful, staff very good, food expensive but lovely and all I would expect (although if I had paid fulll price.....)

"A New Beginning.....Bliss"
Returned home after a devine 2 night stay. Refurbished room brill, food and service a million times better than our previous stay in the New Year. ALL the staff could not be more pleasant or helpful. The Lygon Arms has addressed its problems and has come out the other side sucessfully and with pride. Well done and keep it up.

"New Beginnings"
After hearing some bad reports about the Lygon Arms, after seeing the hotel is a member of The Leading Hotels of The World, my partner and I decided to give it ago. On arrival a very friendly doorman parked our car and we made our way to reception. The receptionist along with the porter were both very pleasant and seemed genuinely interested in where we had come from and why we were visiting Broadway. I was delighted to see the hotel's leisure facilities were more extensive that originally thought with a large pool, bubble pool, sauna and steam room and the spa staff were polite and helpful. Although over charged for my Spa treatment this was quickly rectified and the Duty Manager arranged for a complimentary bottle of wine for our troubles. The Great Hall was very historical and although quite formal the food was fantstic. Our waiter advised that due to a kitchen refurbishment there may be a slight delay to our food order, but once it arrived the main course and desert were of a very good quality. Breakfast service was unfotunately slightly slow as everyone came down to breakfast at the same time, however the staff remained very attentive even under a lot of pressure. The attention to detail and service the staff provide is fantastic and this 16th century hotel is a real gem!

"Great hotel - don't understand the negative reviews!!"
My boyfriend and I stayed at the Lygon over the August bank holiday weekend. We had a fantastic stay in every sense. Having read some of the negative reviews on Trip advisor we really didn;t know what to expect, so we were extremely pleasantly surprised. The hotel is beautiful - grand and old, but also quaint and cosy. It is situated right on the high street in the pretty village of Broadway - its location surprised me a little as I had imagined a building set back from the rest of the village. The staff couldn't have been more welcoming and helpful, the spa was just as we had hoped (nice gym, pool and great treatments) and the breakfast was fantastic. You have a huge buffet to choose from, but also a full menu of hot options, all served in the impressive Great Hall. We ate dinner in Goblets Brasserie and were very impressed by the quality of the food. We have stayed in many high end hotels both in England and overseas, and the Lygon did not disappoint. I can only imagine that the negative reviews have come from people who expected immaculate modern rooms - which is hardly a reasonable expectation from such an old hotel. The room was clean and cosy, and had all of the amenities you would expect. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a romantic/ relaxing break in the cotswolds.

"Gorgeous hotel, a must for everyone"
I took my husband and our 2 little ones (3 and 8months) there to celebrate my husbands 50th birthday. The staff were fantastically helpful, even blowing up numerous armbands and rubber rings so the little ones could go in the pool. The family suite was fantastic. My 3 year old is always going on about going back to "daddy's birthday" as she calls it so we are having to go back for our wedding anniversary. The only complaints we could make was that the breakfast left a little to be desired and the great hall, whilst the food was fantastic, was a little "great" and not as intimate as we would have hoped but apart from that no criticisms. Staff bent over backwards, especially for the children and we felt more relaxed than we had done in years. A must for anyone staying in the cotswolds.
