"Probably the best service in Singapore"
Stayed at this lovely small hotel in October 2006. After staying in several hotels in the region, the Duxton stood out for its friendly service and attention to detail.
A good fairly central location and lots of charm.
I would definately recommend it.

"Simply excellent"
I have nothing but praise for this charming little hotel.
The decor harks back to a bygone age, right down to the odd push-button radios in the rooms. After getting there through Singapore's oppressive humidity, this is a delightful experience. The chains could not compare with it.
The rooms are comfortable if a little dated. The showers are powerful, and the breakfast is as good as I have had this far from home.
But what really stands out about the Berjaya is its service. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff here. If you sat waiting in reception for a couple of minutes, you were offered a drink. The hotel was even able to provide shower facilities after we checked out and before we headed over to the airport.
In short - highly recommended to everyone.

"Grand old lady of a hotel."
I was very pleased with my 2 night stay at this charming and elegant hotel that oozed colonial glamour. The staff were exceptionally accommodating and helpful. We arrived very early at 9am and expected to be allowed to leave our bags there and check in later - what a pleasant surprise to be told we could check in straight away, and when I commented that we would need to leave at 4am on Sunday, the gallant hotel clerk invited us to eat breakfast before going to our room, given that we would not be able to take advantage of it on Sunday. Such tremendous care and thoughfulness is much appreciated and rarely found. The hotel room was unexpectedly spacious with lovely antique style colonial furniture. Other reviewers have commented that some aspects of the rooms require attention. It was certainly true that some paintwork was peeling and the wallpaper lifting in some parts, but I think these are relatively minor issues that do not detract from the overall pleasant impression of the room. The musty smell mentioned by some reviewers was slightly noticeable in the stair well, but not in the room or anywhere else in the hotel. The hotel is well situated in China Town and an easy walk (even with luggage) from Tanjong Pagar MRT. Despite the fact that Duxton Rd is a busy place at night with bars, restaurants etc, there was no noise at all in the room.

"Worth a visit"
I agree mostly with the 'musty charm' review above, but I will add as follows:
On arrival in the rain, a porter came out to the taxi with an umbrella.
On check-in, they presented me with a small glass of juice.
I was escorted to the room and all was explained to me.
It was very quiet.
There were mostly families there.
I got a peek in the more expensive rooms and they were very very nice.
Decor in the lobby was upmarket
Decor in the (back) room that I had was pleasant (marble bench tops in the bathroom for example).
The street the hotel is in is quite old with the old style Singapore architecture.
Most of the houses in the street were night clubs that might have been pink (by some of the names), but did not go in, so cannot confirm.
Newspapers were delivered to the room each morning.
The restaurant next door was very very good.
If you want a pleasant stay away from the chains, this you should consider.
