"Very Nice Hotel" I spent a week at The Amber in late August 2006 (during Formula 1 week) and was very pleased. It is not a 4 star hotel. Some might argue it is not even a 3 star. But forget the stars; except for the large luxury chains they always seem irrelevant to me. What The Amber is is an excellent, reasonably-priced, clean, safe, well-maintained hotel with an accommodating, competent, friendly and helpful staff. The rooms are small, as is to be expected in a renovated Ottoman house, but they are certainly not the smallest I have seen in this part of Istanbul (or even in Amsterdam for that matter). The buffet breakfast (included in the room price) is outstanding. The one major complaint I had was the lack of a dresser or any other flat place except the window sill. The owner explained that they had not completed the renovation and showed me another, completed room which was adequately furnished. I was also disappointed on departure when, despite the fact that I asked for an airport shuttle well in advance (the Best Western catalog says it is free on demand), I had to take and pay for a taxi. I should also say something about the location. The hotel is located on the down side of Sultan Ahmet about 2 blocks from the Sea of Marmara. It is not in a tourist or commericial area, although Sultan Ahmet is only a 10 minute uphill walk. It is a working class residential neighborhood. As such, it is not surprising to see Turks of all ages, male and female, standing or sitting in doorways or playing in the street or nearby parks at any hour of the day or night. The neighborhood is not unsafe. I liked The Amber and I will probably return.
