Best Western Hotel Grand Guinigi was a pleasant surprise. The rooms were large, it was air conditioned, and the staff (although limited in their English ability) was eager to serve. The hotel is about a brisk 20 minute walk from the city walls and the walk can be a bit scary--no sidewalks and plenty of Italian traffic.

"Better than expected"
We arrived in Lucca without hotel reservations in mid May. After checking out different hotels, we were really pleased with the Hotel Guinigi had to offer. Parking is excellent and free. The lobby is modern and spacious and the staff outstanding and always helpful. The elevators were the best size, number and quality of any of the hotels we stayed at in France or Italy. There was free wireless internet in the lobby and in the quiet (and huge) tv room and bar. Our room was a triple and had a large modern bathroom and two large rooms. The furnishing was a bit spartan but the beds were comfortable. Air conditioning worked well. Noise was not a problem. The free breakfast buffet was good and suitable for most people's needs, the waiters were attentive and cheerful. Coffee, tea and hot chocolate served by the waiters and were hot! The main drawback is location, it is only a 15 min walk to a main gate in the Lucca walls but it is along a busy street with narrow walks for pedestrians. There is a city bus available. We paid 150 Euros for our triple for three nights and were very pleased with our stay.

"Excellent Value, Great Staff"
We had a very comfortable triple room for one night and wished we were staying longer! Lucca itself is a treasure and fortunately not over-touristed. The hotel, while outside the city walls, is a quick bus ride (the local bus stops right outside, 80 cents one-way). We made our reservations at the last minute, so there wasn't much in our price range inside the city walls. However, for about $130 U.S. for the triple, the Guinigi was the nicest room we had during our stay, including stops in Rome and Florence. We were there on a weekend, so it was very quiet. The hotel appears to cater to business and tour groups, neither of which were in evidence on the Saturday/Sunday we were there. We had a lot of picky little questions about train travel and other items, which the staff addressed quickly, efficiently, and politely. A high degree of professionalism all around, including the restaurant's waitstaff. The included breakfast buffet was excellent and varied, and lunch was very good, too, and reasonably priced. Unlike other places we stayed, there was a roomy and sparklingly clean bathroom with plenty of towels and toiletries, good airconditioning, nice furnishings. The bar will give you a bucket of ice (a rarity in Italy) for your room...just ask. One of us left a ring behind, and the staff located it and offered to send it back to us at no charge. I travel a lot in Europe--on the cheap--and the Guinigi is the best value for money I've found in a very long time. One caveat: the local bus stops running rather early, so if you're staying in town later than 9 pm or so, you'll have to call for a taxi to get back. It's about 8 Euros.

The Guinigi was a pleasant surprise. The rooms were large, it was air conditioned, and the staff (although limited in their English ability) was eager to serve. Large parking lot was also a plus. The hotel is about a brisk 20 minute walk from the city walls and the walk can be a bit scary--no sidewalks and plenty of Italian traffic. City buses do stop right in front of the hotel and that is a much safer option to walking. We were very pleased with this hotel and highly recommend it.

"Business-class comfort… also for the tourists"
Despite being located in a touristy town like Lucca, the Guinigi seems to focus on the business/convention clientele. I guess that explains the well sized rooms, and their extensive equipment, which we enjoyed all the same even though we were just tourists ourselves. Particularly positive points for the bathroom, the breakfast and the way we were treated by the staff. On the not-so-positive side: hotel location. The distance between the hotel and the sights is somewhat deceptive: it seems close enough for a walk, but the route is not too encouraging because part of it looks like a stretch of secondary road instead of a proper city street. So we finally decided to use our car for just a three-minute ride (the municipal bus is an alternative too). You can not blame the hotel for that, so perhaps it’s the Major of Lucca who should see about it.
