"The best hotel in Tossa!"
We chose this hotel primarily for its location and were not disappointed at all. Having read previous reviews though we had some concerns prior to our visit but used these in a positive way. One review had suggested rooms by the pool were not very private so I e-mailed the hotel in advance to request a room on a high floor and this was arranged. The room was spacious with a king size bed and was very clean. We didn't experience any noise by other guests at all. The choice of food at breakfast was very extensive but did cater primarily for the continental palate. However as English visitors seemed to represent about 5% of the guests I do not think this is unreasonable. Presumably the English food would be hot when first put out at 8am but as it likely to be the least favourite option it was usually cold though the restaurant staff were happy to reheat anything when asked. We did not find language a problem. Some staff were more fluent in English than others but after all this is not England and we should not be surprised if not everyone can be multi-lingual. Having travelled to other Costas and the Balearics we did need to make more effort ourselves to try and speak Spanish. There were clearly some quite well off people staying at this hotel and perhaps they don't need to check the bill. Our bill included use of the minibar and also two evening meals that we hadn't taken. We had booked through expedia-- whose system is to just take your credit card details to secure the booking, the final payment being made on check out. Having read the review highlighting a confusion over payment resulting in an overcharge, we were careful to take two copies of our confirmation with us. Our final bill was more than double than that agreed in our booking with expedia--. The concierge looked at our information, made his own enquiries and apologised profusely for this mistake and for the other over-charging. Tossa de Mar is a lovely resort. It is perhaps most suited to those with young families and older groups rather than teenagers though there were quite a lot of young Europeans there. It's a safe, non-threatening place to go with lots of character and lovely scenery. There's no shortage of boat trips to the south of Tossa but disappointingly little on offer northbound. There is plenty of choice in restaurants and cafes and we would particularly recommend Cafe Berlin. This was a recommendation we had been given and as Cafe Berlin is tucked away in the old town near the church we were sure we wouldn't otherwise have gone there. It is, with good reason, extremely popular and you would need to get there by 7.45 to get a table - each time we went there were people queuing outside waiting for a seat. A lovely holiday - we will be going to Tossa de Mar again and will definitely be staying at the Gran Hotel Reymar.

"Gastronomic delights with a sea view"
Hotel Gran Reymar also has some villas for rent and we hired one of those for 5 days. It was meant for 6 people and we were only 2, so we had space galore! Over two floors the villa has a fully equipped kitchen (dishwasher, washing machine, oven, cooker, fridge/freezer, all utensils, even an iron -as if!- and a baby high chair), a living room, terraces with sea views both on the ground and the first floor, 3 bedrooms, 2 fully equipped bathrooms (one ensuite) and more than enough storage space. To get to the villa you have to climb some pretty steep stone stairs, so if you're not well on your feet, this could be a problem. Next to our villa was a swimming pool and as we were more or less the only users, it was pretty much a private one. We took the full board option at Gran Reymar and boy did we love that: the breakfast was huge (both cold and hot dishes) and both for lunch and dinner there were 4 course meals, served with style at the table either outside on the trrace or in one of the inside dining rooms, always with a view of the sea. The meals were very varied, using local and fresh ingredients, served beautifully and with a smile. We have eaten out a lot over the years but we were pleasantly surprised about the consistently high quality of the food here, especially since we paid less than 200€ per night for the two of us- and that included the huge villa. We will certainly be back!
