"excellent value; friendly staff; clean"
This hotel is one of the best bargains I've found in years. The hotel isn't fancy, but it is very clean. The staff couldn't be friendlier. Despite my awful French, from the manager to the room cleaners, everyone met me with a smile throughout the five nights I stayed there. The location is great, too, right next to the Perrache train station, which connects 2 trams, Lyon's wonderful metro, buses that fan out in every direction, and a handful of trains. A brilliant choice for the budget traveler, especially if, unlike me, you book a room that looks out over Place Carnot.

"Best deal in Lyon"
I got a $56. dollar rate on Expedia in Feb 2005 and I loved this place.
Very clean, good self serve breakfast, right next to the main train station.Walking distance to every thing downtown and even Old Lyon.
And NO extra taxes at that price. Most of the French businessmen in this hotel were paying 65 EURO for the room i got for 56 DOLLARS. THAT's a big difference!

"Great Location"
We stayed at the Campanile Lyon Perrache for 2 nights from 10 October. Hotel is excellently located on Place Carnot in front of the Perrache transport interchange - less than 5 minutes walk from the Airport Bus terminus.
Our room was on the top (seventh) floor overlooking Place Carnot, and had a small balcony from which we could watch Lyon go by - but were high enough to be above the traffic noise. The room was comfortable but a bit small (only 9 inches between the foot of the bed and the wall) - however we didn't spend enough time in the room for this to be an issue. Bathroom was also "compact" - but there was always (very) hot water. The TV had a range of French and Italian channels plus CNN (why don't more European hotels take BBC World instead of CNN???!!!)
Breakfast was a comprehensive continental buffet to set us up for the day. Contrary to some previous reports we found the staff consistently helpful and friendly, including letting us check in early (we had assumed that we would have to leave our luggage, and go sightseeing until later). There is a Baggage Room behind Reception.
Central Lyon is quite compact, and most tourist areas are within walking distance - however Perrache is an ideal location if you want to use Lyon's excellent public transport (a day ticket covering metro, trams and buses is excellent value at 4.50 euros).
We thoroughly recommend this hotel as an unostentatious but comfortable base, superbly located for a short break - but do try to get a room on a high floor to minimse traffic noise.
Finally, a restaurant recomendation. Brasserie Georges is a classic french brasserie, huge barn of a place, 5 minutes walk away across the road behind Perrache. It is noisy and bustling, brews its own beer, and serves hearty food - and was packed out at 7.30 on an October Thursday. Not the place for a romantic "diner a deux", but good food, reasonable prices and great atmosphere.
