"Classic old world charm"
My husband and I enjoyed a relaxing 3 day stay in the Carlton. It is a classic and beautiful hotel in a perfect location situated between the old town and the Guggenheim museum. It is a 10 minute walk through the shopping district to the old town with traditional plazas and tapas bars and we found some fantatic truly spanish restaurants full of atmosphere. In the other direction is a 10 min walk to the Guggenheim a stunning building in itself never mind the internal exhibitions. We had considered staying at the newly built Domaine hotel which is perfectly located opposite the museum, but this would not have been so convenient for other sights, we enjoyed lunch there instead and would recommend that. The Carlton is a fabulous building and is of historical importance to the city. We booked a standard room which was fine, plenty of room very large bed good sized bathroom etc could have done with tea and coffee making facilities. The breakfasts are wonderful everything you could wish for including champagne - which my husband opened much to the amusement of the other spanish guests!! All the staff are very friendly and helpful, advising on the best restaurants and how to buy football tickets for Athletico Bilbao (which we attended). This was a little piece of paradise in our busy life of 3 children with all their activities, this was time for us and we thoroughly enjoyed spending it here and were very sorry to leave.....would highly recommend.

"A gem of a hotel"
What a gorgeous hotel. We were lucky to get a room on the top floor with a balcony and a great view. Bed was v comfy and the bathroom was huge. Within walking distance to all the sites and the main shopping area.
