"A Great Alternative to Geneva City Hotels"
For those with access to a car looking for a more relaxed experience, staying at Divonne-les-Bains is a great alternative to overnighting in Geneva itself - it's only 15 minutes away from downtown when the autobahn isn't jammed.
The Chateau is a renovated 18th to 19th century country residence full of charm and character, with all the modern amenities available - but still featuring the original creaky flooring, huge wooden window shutters and patterened fabric wallpaper. Our double room was massive after spending many nights in city hotels, with a marble bathroom appropriate to the property's luxury rating, a phenomenal King-sized bed, and antique furniture.
Service is acceptably friendly (although better in French than English - but where in France is that not the case?) and efficient. Breakfast was a real treat, with champagne and smoked salmon served by huge bay windows overlooking Lac Leman. We ate dinner one night at the Michelin one-star restaurant and were not disappointed - nine intricated courses accompanied by a great Bordeaux definitely reminded us we had travelled from Germany and Switzerland into France, although the service was a little on the hurried and curt side.
The pool was closed for the season, but it looked very nice, and the entire property is well-manicured and beautiful. For romantics and couples headed for Geneva, put this one on your list.
