Hotel Information
A 14th And 17th Century Cistercian Mansion...

In the 6th century, Germain, Bishop of Paris, was the owner of the estate of Gilly. In his honour, the Benedictine monks built a priory. In the Middle Ages, the monks of Cîteaux came to live there and fortified the Priory of Gilly.

This precaution did not prevent several attacks and destruction during the Hundred Years' War. In the 16th century, Nicolas Boucherat II, 51st Abbot of Cîteaux, decided to rebuild the chateau de Gilly and make it into a residential dwelling (which it remained up to 1789). However, the French Revolution upset this situation and on 14th May 1790, the properties of the Cistercian monks were declared a national asset.

The Chateau de Gilly was sold to the Côte d'Or Department; it was restored and inaugurated as the "Chateau-theatre of Gilly-lès-Cîteaux" on 12th January 1978. This experiment lasted until 1985. Following considerable building work, the gates of the chateau-hotel de Gilly opened to the public in September 1988.

"Beauty, if you can afford it."
Stayed in a deluxe room, in a pavillon a bit away from the hotel. Fabulous room, but 250 Euros. Setting is pure beauty, you get the feel of a 16th century castle. Service is outstanding.

"To die for."
Reminiscing the stay at Gilly makes tears come to my eyes. Tear of happiness of course. This is the quitescential old europe feel. If you can only stay one day in Europe and only in one place, this would be at the top of my list. Staying in the historical abbey away from the hustle and bustle of large citiies cannot be beat. It does make me cry tears of sorrow to think of the hotel room in Paris we had just before travelling to Vougeot. Very friendly and accomodating staff. They took the initiative to arrange a dinner reservation in their restaurant on the evening of our arrival. I can't thank them enough for this kindness. They didn't need to fill up the restaurant...just ask the locals. Beautiful rooms in a beautiful setting at a reasonable price. Very close to Dijon with a Wal-mart like store along the highway to Dijon in case you need a sweater or salami. Wonderful! Be sure to see the woman "who cuts the cheese". (she knows what this means)

"On of the best"
I can only agree with most of the reviews here. This is a great hotel. Very classy. I stayed in September 2006. Enjoyed everything. Don't have negative comments. It was a great experience. I stayed in a meddium expensive room and it was great. Large and beautiful. Great gourmet experience at the chateau's restaurant! (expensive, as expected). Moreover, the chateau is located in a great region. Great for wine lovers! Highly recommended to all exigent travelers.

"Enjoyable and relaxing, in lovely setting"
We stopped for 2 nights at Chateau de Gilly towards the end of October 2006 on our way down to the south of France. We struggled to get a room and in the end we booked ourselves into their apartment, which is a 2 story house in the grounds of the Chateau with its own gated entrance and gravel parking area. This is typically expensive, but we managed to negotiate a price we were happy with for the 2 nights on a B&B basis. To say the apartment (or house!) was stunning would be a total and utter understatement. It was moated on 3 sides, had its own gated entrance and was on 3 stories, of which 1 was a basement and not used. The upstairs was a huge bedroom, with adjoining bathroom, together with a dressing area. We had stunning views across the gardens from our room. The downstairs was a lounge and dining area, finished to a very high standard with plasma and Bose surround systems. Quite simply if you stay in this apartment and are disappointed you are mad. Secluded, private, quiet, luxurious with a small walk (200 yards or so) into the Chateau for us it was a perfect place to relax and get away from the world. The good news is that there was also full room service, even though we were away from everything in the gardens. We ate both nights in the Chateau, first off in the smaller and less inviting basement area, and on the second night in the main restaurant area, which was much better. The first night, which was a Saturday was not ideal as it was obviously full of people on the weekend packages, with basic menus. We got silver service, but it was obvious that others were not so lucky and the staff were looking stressed and rushed, though never took this out on the customer, remaining professional at all times. The second night was different, and we even joked with the staff about this. The food, as you would hope and expect was to a very good standard. The wine list was huge, though somewhat expensive to my mind, with nothing really below 100euros for 1 bottle. We also found the staff friendly and helpful, with a professional and smiling approach to their guests at all times of the day and night. We would happily stay there again and for anyone taking the drive from Calais down to the south of France, Spain or Italy I would happily recommend this Chateau as a safe and relaxing port of call. If you can try and get the apartment, and if like me you have a car that needs to be parked safely, you will love the private and gated section for parking right outside your door.

"A perfect honeymoon"
My husband and I spent part of our honeymoon at Gilly and it was exactly what we wanted: to stay in a historic chateau in the dead of winter and enjoy some amazing food and wine. Every staff member we met was extremely courteous and professional. Our room was immense and the bathroom was equally large and modern. We hope to return often.
