extreme
The staff are all extremely helpful and friendly, organising and advising on trips etc. The rooms basic but very clean, comfortable and with air-con [great as we hit a heatwave!]. Food everywhere is cheap and the hotel restaurant, whilst not the cheapest or necessarily the most Polish menu, provides a good meal. Outside the main city area but very accessible - several trams/buses, or an incredibly cheap taxi [8 zlottis/2 euros] or a 20 minute stroll. Walking is definitely an option, as it is straight down one main road and not once. walking back at 9/10pm, did we feel uneasy. Will definitely return!

a great hotel.
My partner and I stayed at the Chopin for a week in July 2005, and for the money this is a great hotel.
Arriving:
Oddly, we paid 62 Zloty for a taxi from Balice airport to the hotel, but only 44 going back. Something to do with Zones, apparently.. It's about 20-30 minutes, and we only used licensed cabs (they have lights on top, phone numbers on the side and a tarrif in the window) and had no problems. The same goes for all our taxi travel in and around Krakow.
Location:
Don't be put off by the location, the hotel is in a really nice area, right by the university hospital , medical school, horticultural society and observatory and only a short (10 minute) picturesque walk to the city center. The trick is to avoid "Lubicz", the big main road, and walk down 'M. Kopernika' and across the Westerplatte instead and you're in Maly Rynek. If you are staying over a Sunday you might want to take a diversion off M Kopernika to the distinctly odd flea market at the bottom of "ul. Blich" - just take a left before the railway bridge.
If you don't want to walk, there are trams right outside, along with a taxi rank.
Tram tickets for the day (oh, and postage stamps) can be bought from the souvenir shop inside the hotel. A taxi to Maly Rynek will set you back between 7 and 12 Zloty (1-2 UK Pounds at time of writing), depending on time of day and traffic.
The Room:
The Chopin has recently been modernised, our room had air conditioning and heating all on thermostats, and a nice new shower and bath unit. In fact, they replaced the rather old TV with a brand new model one day while we were out. I thought I'd walked into the wrong room!
The room was not the biggest, but then there's so much to do we didn't spend much time there except to sleep.
Food:
Didn't use the restaurant except for breakfast. We didn't have to, there are so many places to eat in the city. Breakfast was good, and busy. All the really good sausages were gone by about 09:00 though, so get there early ;-)
The staff were all very friendly and helpful, both on the desk and in the bar.
Overall we had a fantastic time in Krakow, thanks in no small part to the Chopin. I'd be more than happy to go back there next time I'm in the city.

Chopin hotel
We spent 4 nights at the Chopin hotel at the end of August. We were impressed by the staff, cleanliness and comfort of the rooms, the excellent breakfast and the quiet location. We also had dinner at the reastaurant on our first night and were delighted with the food and the service. Large groups of tourists and conference delegates stay there as well and we were concerned about long queues at mealtimes but the staff have it all under control. We also had a great deal including one night free!
