Pleasant Stay
Two of us stayed 5 nights in June. Very convenient location directly across from the train station and the central transportation for the city and outlying areas but most attractions were within walking distance. The room and continental breakfast were very basic. This met our needs for a good place to shower and lay our heads each night and have a small breakfast. We had a streetside room but after the windows and drapes were closed it was quiet. It was great for people watching out the window. If we ever can get back to Bern we would definately stay here again. We had a Swiss Saver Pass so we hopped on trains, trams and boats to see much of the surrounding area.So if you need only the basics and a convenient location choose this hotel. |

I stayed here on May 2008 for two nights. My room was of average size and to be honest the decoration was a little bit bland. Staff were the most helpful, they helped me with questions about getting around. The hotel was very close to main attractions, it was right in the city center. I had a train to catch so it was great that the trainstation was right next to the hotel. |

good location
City Am Bahnhof Hotel was my first stop in Switzerland and I spent one night in this hotel. I was travelling by train, so it was very easy to find and carry my luggage, because City Am Bahnhof Hotel is just opposite the train station. It is also close to the city centre and everything worths to visit in Bern. My room was not the best one I've seen, but it was OK. |

Good location and value
The hotel is located opposite to the Bern Station and is easy to locate. It is decorated in modern simple style. The room is tidy and clean. The worse about this hotel is that they also provide american buffet breakfast but since our voucher only included continental buffet breakfast (but only 1 croissant allowed to be taken), the waitress there never stopped keepping her eyes on us to see if we would "steal" any of the ham and cheese from the buffet table which gave us very uneasy feeling. Except for this, the hotel is generally good. |

"CityAm - modern hotel right across from the train station -"
the CityAm is literally across the street from the train station - just look straight ahead. Our room was modern with a double bed and a very nice bathroom. The window overlooked some rooftop gardens and was quite nice. The room is spartan to be sure without a lot of decoration, but it is good sized and everything was clean. My boyfriend and I arrived in Bern on the first night of our 17 day trip. We were travelling on Eurail passes so this hotel was a nice place to start - not too hard to find after coming off the train! Bern is a lovely city - you must check the views of the clock tower and city from the rooftop of the Bern Cathedral (the stairs are not too bad!) and also the farmer's markets are amazing - I believe it was on Saturday. The Bern movie at the Bear Pits visitor center is also worth a watch. Bern is a very lovely city without being too overwhelmingingly large. Note - check on Expedia for nice rates on the CityAm.

"Excellent base for visiting Bern by train"
We chose this hotel because of its generally favorable reviews on this forum and proximity to the Bern train station. If you are traveling by train and are looking for a reasonably priced hotel, then we highly recommend it. Switzerland is an expensive country, so we feel that the quality of the hotel was an excellent deal at the price we paid. The rooms were clean and comfortable, and the location can't be beat if you're traveling by train. The breakfast was fine but nothing special. Standard continental fare.
We spent one day in Bern, and we're glad we did. The city center (where all the tourists are) is a modern city, built on medieval foundations. That's reflected in the architecture, cobblestone streets, and interesting water fountain sculptures positioned all along the main street. We recommend seeing the clock tower (the demonstration is at 4 minutes before each hour) and the multimedia show about Bern's history, in the visitors center adjacent to the bear pits. The Einstein exhibit will be at the Natural History museum until October (2006), and that was interesting too. We were disappointed not to see Parliament, as it was shrouded due to renovations (and closed on Sunday, the day we were there). We traveled to Bern from Interlaken, so we stopped in Thun along the way and visited the Castle there, which was also interesting.
The restaurant "Tidbits" in the train station was a good value. They have a buffet (no meat) that we enjoyed and at a reasonable price. Excellent sald bar.
In the context of the price category of the hotel and proximity to the train station, I rank City Am Bahnhof very highly.

"Just fine !"
My wife and I stayed here in July of 2005 - it was clean and quiet if a bit spartan, but had all the essentials. It was a one minute walk from the train station. If you are looking for a good base from which to travel by train to surrounding areas, it is just fine. The breakfast was included for us - bread, jams, yogurt, cereal, fruit. Nothing spectacular but since it was included we ate it. The front desk staff were exceedingly pleasant and helped us with questions about taking the tram etc.... This is not a resort hotel and you wouldn't stay there for that. But if you want a great central location for travel around Switzerland by train, you can't beat Berne, and City Am a good spot for couples or singles.
