"A real treat"
This was a November treat for us, and we got a really good deal on the price (50%), so we got superb value. The attitude of the Connemara Coast is really welcoming and generous. Unlike other fairly posh hotels, most things are included in the price. The pool is smaller than it looks in the photos, but it’s really nice, and perfect for cooling down between basking in the sauna and soaking in the jacuzzi! The outdoor hot tub is bliss! We enjoyed relaxing in the hot frothy bubbles, really cosy as we gazed at the silver-blue moonlight reflected on the cold November sea. The breakfasts are very nice and you can have almost anything you can think of. Dinner at the restaurant (not usually included in the room price) was really delicious both evenings – not as traditional as we’d hoped but really tasty and varied (good vegetarian options too) and the portions were very generous. The only thing to slightly spoil it was the truly terrible musak – it was usually a compilation of extra slow electro-orchestral versions of sad old classics like Yesterday or When I fall in Love. Perhaps if enough of us ask, they’ll get rid of it… But the staff were really friendly, the wine was lovely and we were really satisfied. Our room was very nice – most of the rooms have sea-views, but it looks like when the hotel is full, you could get stuck with quite a cramped room. The location of the hotel is great for driving around. It’s only about 15 min from Galway, which is an interesting, pleasant, harbourside city, and the road the hotel is on is breath-takingly pretty as you go towards the Connemara. The scenery is gorgeous and the Connemara National Park is 1h 30 min away, where you can go for some lovely walks. From the hotel itself you can walk along the beach and explore the rock-pools and there were a few interesting birds wading about too, but other than that you have to drive. There isn’t really a pub in walking distance but the hotel bar is done up a bit like a pub and is perfect for a chilled Guinness before dinner.

"Fantastic Winter Break at the Connemara"
My wife and I stayed at the Connemara Coast Hotel between 28th November and 1st December 2006. We booked the hotel through their website and paid 330 EURO ( just over £200) for 3 nights B&B, and this also included dinner for two nights - which, as we were to find out, was superb value. We had stayed at the CCH's impressive sister hotel, The Brooks, in Dublin about 3 years ago (which I would strongly recommend) , and, as we had decided on a winter break in Ireland for a week, thought that this would be the ideal opportunity to check it out. We had spent the three previous nights at the Hotel Westport, Co.Mayo ( see review elsewhere ) and drove down to Galway through the beautiful Connemara National Park. The Hotel is easily found about a 15 minute drive on a main road leading out of Galway City. There are a couple of small villages nearby, but the hotel is definitely in an-out-of-the-way location. First impressions of this relatively modern, low rise building gave the feel of a 'country -lodge' style hotel, and these were reinforced in the reception / lobby area, with lots of comfy sofas and roaring fires - very welcome in Ireland at that time of year! We were a bit early for our room, so we had a quick Guiness in the bar . During the day you can get a drink from the Sin Sceal Eile pub which is part of the hotel. In the evening there is a second bar, the Players Cocktail Bar, which is in the same area. All in all, a pleasant place for a relaxing drink and waiter service - what more could want?! The prices were very reasonable - about £2.60 for a Guiness. Soon enough,we headed off to our room. It was located at the end of one of the main wings. Before going to the CCH, I had read in some reviews that some people thought that the rooms were not quite up to 4 Star standard or needed updating. I have to say that our room was absolutely fine, and had quite a warm, homely feel to it, which you don't always get. There was also a fantastic view over Galway Bay and the Aran Islands and it was so close to the beach you could hear the surf crashing onto the shore. The bathroom was spotless. For those that take an interest such things, the walls in the rooms are 'solid' i.e not plasterboard that you often get in new hotel's, which made the room nice and quiet. I have stayed in quite a few 3/4 star hotels, and I would definitely place CCH as a 4 Star hotel overall. Anyway, we unpacked, and it was time for dinner. Another quick Guiness in the Players cocktail bar, and then into the main 'adults only' restaurant. As mentioned, we had two nights evening meal off of the 4-course table d'hote menu, which we discovered was 37 EURO each. You can also at pick and choose from the a la carte menu at a supplement. I simply cannot over state how good the food is at this hotel, especially at the price. Amongst other things, we ate roast duck with braised red cabbage, Irish lamb shank, turbot with chorizo risotto, crab salad, coconut king prawns... yum! We couldn't fault anything we ate. Living in Cornwall, we eat out a lot at some really good seafood restaurants, and cook seafood a lot ourselves, but we both agreed that the seafood at this hotel was some of the best we've ever had. We retired to the cocktail bar, this time giving the black stuff a miss and trying out cocktail menu. Can't remember what we had but I'm sure they were nice! A very comfortable night's sleep, and with the hotel serving breakfast until 11 am, no rush to get up. There were all the usual options for breakfast plus a range of cooked to order items, including a Full Irish, which needless to say was wonderous and ruled out any need for lunch! We spent our days driving around the local area, it really is a stunningly picturesque part of the world. The hotel is well located to explore the Connemara Coast (obviously!), the Aran Islands, Lough Corrib, Galway City and many other places of interest. Even though the weather was truly awful when we were there, it was a lovely region to tour around in - surely one of the most unspoiled parts of Western Europe. In time - honoured tradition, we did not use any of the hotel's leisure facilities during our stay so will not comment upon them. In summary, the CCH is a hotel I would 100% recommend. The restaurant is simply outstanding, and the bar and pub very relaxing. The staff in all areas of the hotel were first class, very helpful and profesional. For those that have stayed at the Brooks in Dublin and are thinking of trying the CCH, I would say it is a slightly different hotel, more of a 'country' hotel in style and atmosphere that is in keeping with it's surroundings, with a less sophisticated feel. But you still get the same high standard of service and excellent food. It is set in a beautiful location and we would love to go back - perhaps next time in the summer though!
