Visitors must take the pedestrianized rue du Boeuf to get to the hotel – unless they arrive by taxi. Automated glass doors swing open as guests take a small corridor that opens out into the Renaissance courtyard, topped by a glass roof. Smart-suited concierge, modern art and hand-painted frescoes set the tone as guests are ushered to reception, next to one of the building’s three fairy-tale towers. There are lifts, but the joy of this hotel, reopened by owners Monsieur and Madame Sibuet in 2000, is its labyrinthine feel.

The largest, the Jeu de Paume, has space for 150 people, overlooks a small interior courtyard and has 15th-century columns.
