"Superior hotel"
I stayed at the Crowne Plaza for an over night break in September and liked it. The bedrooms are large with a floor to ceiling window giving great views of the city. Everything you need is in the rooms from ironing boards to a well stocked mini bar. Plus air conditioning, even if the unit is a little dated. Which can be said of the hotel in general, but it was never shabby or dirty. My only complaint about the rooms is that the doors are big old things that bang shut and are not at all sound proofing because of the large gaps at the base of all of them!
All the public spaces in the hotel are impressive and there are adequate, super fast lifts! However, if you use the carpark you will find it poorly lit and a bit depressing. The stairwell upto the front of the hotel is shabby and not at all inviting.
The location is great. Ideal for the nightlife of Broad street and Brindley Place, and the shops at the Bull Ring. However, the immediate area at the front of the hotel is a bit run down and you would need to use subways or a foot bridge to cross into the city's central area. Which was not a problem to me but the elderly and families may find it so, especially at night.
I would stay here again, but would look for a fairer rate as i see other guests have paid less, and had better value for money.

"Great hotel, very happy stay"
Our stay at the Crowne Plaza was a delight from beginning to end. Check in was swift and efficient, and so were the lifts at all times. At the time of booking we had asked for a high floor room, and were given one. Our room was wonderfully spacious with two double beds and lots of storage space. There was a nice roomy seating area. The beds were very comfortable and the minibar well stocked. Minus point - only 4 hangers in the wardrobe!
Contrary to some experiences on TripAdvisor here, our room had been recently refurbished and had a new and fresh feel.
We ate in the restaurant both nights and were pleased with the ambience and service. I agree that breakfast was expensive (£16 per head) but we have never felt such confidence in the management of the breakfast service in a hotel before. Although under huge pressure of numbers of guests, Sharon the manager dealt with everything superbly well and kept her finger on the pulse at all times. It was a delight to see and experience this perennial problem area in hotels dealt with so well.
Concierge was a long-serving and capable member of staff who looked after us quickly each time we wanted help.
Some previous reviewers have commented on the view from the rooms, but what do you expect to see from a Birmingham hotel room window? The Hanging Gardens of Babylon perhaps?(etc!). Birmingham is as it is. We would say it is quite a hike from the hotel to New Street station and the Bull Ring, so would suggest getting a taxi, which each time for us arrived very quickly via the concierge.
Very happy with our stay and would definitely return.

"Decent enough"
Stopped here on business in January 07 for 2 nights.
The best thing about this hotel is the location, as it is only a 5 minute walk from broad street and the excellent shops that Birmingham has to offer.
The room I was in was huge, with 2 double beds. (There was only me in the room so a smaller room would have sufficed).
The room was very clean and offered complimentary bottled mineral water, biscuits, tea and coffee.
The room decor certainly isn't modern but is decent enough for todays standards.
There was no sky tv channels in the room which was a bit disappointing.
I had mixed feelings about the breakfast. The choice was plentiful with plenty on offer for those looking at watching their calories, or those like me who wanted to fill their faces with a full English breakfast. Unfortunately pretty much all of the cooked breakfast (help yourself service) was luke warm, which spoiled it as I had to eat it really quick to stop it from going cold.
Overall tho this is a decent enough hotel which shouldn't leave you disappointed.
