"a fun experience"
When planning a recent trip to Budapest for myself and my partner, I checked the rates at many hotels, and was surprised to find that the Gellert was substantially less than other "luxury" hotels, and that its cheapest rooms were in the "budget" range. I almost booked a low-priced room, but after reading the reviews, I decided not to risk it, but instead to splurge on a deluxe room. I normally do not pay more than $100 for a room, but at just over $200 including breakfast and use of the thermal baths, I thought this might be an opportunity to experience old-world grandeur, if a bit faded, at a not-outrageous price. We were not disappointed. Location is great, we were able to walk to everything. The room was lovely and well furnished. The bathroom was spacious and modern but not fancy and there were traces of mildew around the bathtub. The unpleasant fluorescent lighting in the lobby and halls detracts from the atmosphere, and the thermal baths and dressing rooms need restoration. Breakfast offered a wide selection of food, but the quality was average. However, the overall experience wes great fun, and I would definitely stay here again.

"Lovely overnight spa stay"
We booked into the hotel for Christmas Eve to spoil ourselves (we were staying at the Botel Hotel Lisa - see other review) and had a lovely night. The hotel has an olde world elegance about it, with an element of "shabby chic", and if you're interested in architecture, the Art Noveau facade is beautiful. We thoroughly enjoyed our spa experience, although were disappointed it wasn't open on Christmas day. Our room was huge, and the furnishings luxurious. On the downside, the bathroom was old, and there was a suspicious brown on the grouting which smacked of mould - a real bugbear of mine! Breakfast was absolutely yummy, and extensive, including an organic and vegan buffet section. The location is excellent too - right near a major tram stop, but also an easy 15 minute walk across the bridge into Pest. Recommended.

"What a unique experience!"
We were lucky enough to land a room with a great view of the Danube. The room had huge windows, tall ceilings, and lots of charm. It wasn't the lap of luxury, but it was certainly a nice departure from the typical cookie-cutter hotel experience. The baths- although they are managed separately from the hotel, they deserve a mention! Wonderful, but don't expect the good people working there to speak much English. Just put on your robe and go with the flow!

"A classic must do!"
I've just sadly left Budapest and the Gellert Hotel where we stayed for four nights. And, I'm also sad to hear the disappointing reviews as I loved both our stay at the hotel and our daily visits to the baths. Yes I am a woman and so was in the woman's area for the thermal baths, but found the Gellert Baths charming, and relaxing. I've been to many other baths (or hammam) in different countries and would not rate the Gellert Baths so poorly as some of the other reviews. Of course I did not go there with the expectation that this was going to be like a modern "western" spa, but it was certainly more comfortable and easier to negotiate than in some other countries. A point of interest I learnt on this trip, is that Hungary is second only to Iceland for the amount of thermal water (as an antipodean I wondered where New Zealand rates on that list). A visit to the Gellert Baths would be on my recommended list of things to do in Budapest, and I would also suggest a visit to the Gellert hotel on the same outing. Climb all the stairs in the hotel to view the stained glass on each landing, or take afternoon tea at the Gellert Hotel Brasserie after your visit to the baths. Note that for hotel guests there are a full list of instructions to the baths in the room and a separate elevator. Fees for the baths are included in the hotel rate. Enjoy!

Nice people
The hotel needs some money to be spent it. It still has some of its original charm. The staff work hard on compensating the hotel's deficiancies. Older lady in housekeeping and the repeption people made our stay pleasent. Don't expect a modern hotel but it's friendly place.

"a good hotel"
The spa is a fun, pampering experience and far more affordable here than anywhere in America. It can be a bit unnerving at first-- communal nudity? But it's gender divided and comfortable. You can keep your bathing suit on as you alternate from hot to cold water, but may feel more self-conscious if you do so. Definitely worth experiencing.
