LOCATION
Domus Sessoriana Hotel is located in the very centre of Rome, near Termini railway station, the Colosseum, San Giovanni in Laterano and the San Giovanni underground stop.
The Santa Croce in Gerusalemme basilica is on the site of an imperial palace from the 3rd century a.d. called the Sessorium, which was built on an ancient Roman necropolis.
The monastery connected to the basilica was founded in the 10th century. Various orders came to the monastery: the Montecassino benedictanes, the San Frediano di Lucca canons, the Carthusians and - since 1561 - the Cistercians of the Congregation of St.Bernard, who still today look after the whole complex.
The Cistercian order was founded in 1098 by the saints Robert, Alberic and Stephan as an extension of the Benedictine rule in Citeaux, France. They developed the rule Ora et Labora - pray and work.
