LOCATION

Domus Sessoriana Hotel is located in the very centre of Rome, near Termini railway station, the Colosseum, San Giovanni in Laterano and the San Giovanni underground stop.

The Santa Croce in Gerusalemme basilica is on the site of an imperial palace from the 3rd century a.d. called the Sessorium, which was built on an ancient Roman necropolis.

The monastery connected to the basilica was founded in the 10th century. Various orders came to the monastery: the Montecassino benedictanes, the San Frediano di Lucca canons, the Carthusians and - since 1561 - the Cistercians of the Congregation of St.Bernard, who still today look after the whole complex.

The Cistercian order was founded in 1098 by the saints Robert, Alberic and Stephan as an extension of the Benedictine rule in Citeaux, France. They developed the rule Ora et Labora - pray and work.

"A haven in Rome"
We were a family of 2 adults and 1 child, so we had a large triple room, with a separate bathroom. The room was not lavishly furnished but clean with one large window high in the wall and very high ceilings. Half the site still functions as a monestry and there is a lovely church and garden. The roof top terrace was just superb for watching the sun go down over Rome with a bottle of wine. Breakfast was served downstairs and we thought very good by european standards, plenty of everything. The staff were very helpful and even allowed us to check in early at 10.30am when we arrived exhausted from our 23 hour flight. We noted some other travellers had trouble finding the place but we found it with no difficulty at all when we walked from Termini station, about 30 minutes. You just go to the smaller door to the right of the main church entrance. We did the walk to/from the station 3 times and also walked to the Coloseum and back. The nearest metro was about a 10 minute walk away and we did use this as well. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay as we found the location to be just slightly away from the general bustle of Rome and rather peaceful. There are still enough places to eat situated in the streets nearby to please most tastes. We would stay there again tomorrow as it was a unique experience.

"Would stay here again."
Location, location, location. Bus stop is just across the square, so you can be at the Rome Termini in 15 minutes. From there you can get on a train, subway, or bus anywhere...either within the city or outside. Room was comfortable, clean and well appointed. Hotel staff very professional. Two women traveling without husbands felt very safe both at the Domus and surrounding neighborhood. There is an excellent cafe across the square...their ciambella alone (say "chahm-BELL-ah" -- a huge raised donut with sugar), is worth the trip! Trattoria Bottega on same block was likewise excellent. Unlike many convent/monastery properties, the Domus has no curfew. Bountiful breakfast served from seven to ten.

"an ideal base"
stayed here for a 3 night break, it is slightly outside central rome but close enough to access the metro and buses. the rooms were comfortable and clean but we experienced a little street noise as our room was at the front. the breakfast was great and plentiful. the staff are helpful and will endeavour to communicate in english. the view from the roof garden is a must. we enjoyed our stay here and would recomend this hotel for those who like something a little different.

"A Roman hotel with atmosphere and history"
I stated here at the end of May and found it a comfortable and characterful retreat from the busy sightseeing of the day. The room was enormous, overlooking the monks' garden. It was also spotlessly clean. The staff were helpful, and it was easy to reach the main sites by bus or taxi. Breakfast was good, to set you up for a day of sightseeing. Incidentally it used to be a monastery, founded on the site of a Roman palace. Talk about atmosphere! I would recommend it to travellers; perhaps not so much to tourists who want something ritzy.
